WEAR? WITTON LE WEAR (12/10/10)

image

image We are at Witton Castle a massive holiday park with the castle at it’s centre. Sounds a bit grim and I bet it is in summer. We are virtually on our own so it is a grand place with ponds, mixed woodland, the river Wear and a castle which though it dates from the mid fourteen hundreds has existed in it’s current form from the early nineteenth century.

As is my wont we have had a quick wander round and it looks to have possibilities for some photographic fun. Time will tell.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   A bit of the castle.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA     A bit more of it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA The leaves are just about to put on their autumn show.

There are several interesting corners, the odd folly and there must be abundant wildlife. I can feel a nocturnal outing and painting with light coming on. The wildlife side of things is taking a back seat at the moment as half a pack of terriers are not conducive to fauna photography. Photography in any form…….truth be told.

See you tomorrow.

  1. Blimey Adrin, you don't 'arf get around! Have you ever been to look at the Bishop of Durham'sPalace and Deer Park in Bishop Auckland, almost within spitting distance of where you're anchored? It has a very unusual deer house in the grounds..and some lovely old trees

  2. That's one hell of an impressive castle!

The area looks like it's got some great potential.

  3. I would like to know, is it two people trying to come here to commit suicide on the towers of the castle?

  4. Phil, I got around this weekend. I'll have a look at the Palace thanks for that.

Keith, an altogether impressive place, we'll see what I can turn up.

Bob, that's what I thought they are statues bizarre place to put them.

  5. Only visitors to the castle would know, but I find this building to be a bit odd in it's use. I have never taken photographs of it before but now that you have brought it to my attention, I can see some potential. I attended a sort of Festival a few times on an adjacent field on occasions & one of my friends has just bought a caravan there so no doubt I shall be returning there at some point.

  7. Thanks for the map. I like to have a rough idea what part of the country I'm looking at. That's a pretty grand castle - and in the middle of a holiday park! Love the statues, they add a human element somehow.

  8. Just catching up with your latest blog entries! I really enjoyed looking at the old tractors, ploughs and horses ~ what an amazing gathering! Terrific photos, and great idea about the panoramas. You are in another interesting area, and I hope that you get good weather in the Lake District. I'm looking forward to seeing the autumn leaves. Hope the weather is cooperative for you.

  10. Heavens above Adrian. You're now managing to ferret out places and edifices of which I've never even heard. Splendid looking edifice this one though.

  11. GB, it is but mostly bad taste Victorian. Not helped by a static caravan park of mind boggling proportions. There is a nice walled garden ruined by it's current use as a childrens play area.
