MELROSE. (10/11/14)

This morning I braved the A708 from Moffat to Selkirk. It’s a grand twisty road. It takes me through some stunning countryside but although it’s two lane it is just a bit too narrow to relax on. The Highland single track roads are in many ways easier.

My plan was to stop at the Grey Mares Tail, I think it is the fifth highest waterfall in Great Britain. I did stop and waited an hour to see if the fog would clear but came to the conclusion that it was cloud I was in and not mist. On we went and suddenly I could see for miles. I stopped at the Tibbie Shiels Inn and  would have stopped the night if I could have found anyone to negotiate a price with. I took some pictures instead.

_MG_0840     The Loch of the Lowes. On I went but not before knocking the exhaust pipe on a nasty hump. No real damage but I had to crawl under the van to replace one of the big rubber bands that hold it on.

Eventually we arrived in Melrose. It is a grand little town and has all that is required to keep body and soul together.

_MG_0845     It would be better if it wasn’t foggy.

_MG_0844       I called at Millers the butcher and got a steak to celebrate. It is a superb shop but a wee bit pricey. I’ll try his Haggis and puddings tomorrow.

There are lots of things to take pictures of here so I may stay a while. I’m on my way to St Abb’s Head but I have a good couple of weeks to fit everything in. Now I have miles of video to edit for tomorrow.

Have a great week.

    1. Frances, it's just luck. Nine times out of ten it is blowing a hooley. Worth knocking an exhaust pipe for.

    1. Douglas, it's just being in the right place at the right time. I would have switched to a wider lens but it looked a bit murky. I wish I had now as the 24mm would have got me pictures sharp front to back.

    1. Bob, I always enjoy a good reflection. A bit more drama in the sky would have been good.

  6. Another beautiful collection, Adrian. Stunning views and fabulous photos. The name of the street where I lived the first 13 years of my life was Melrose Avenue (in Montreal).

    1. Hilary, thank you. Now hopefully you will be able to see plenty of the town your avenue was named after.

    1. Laura, not an artist. Nature is the artist.

    1. YP, thanks for the link. I've had a good look at the views he found in Melrose. I'll extend my stay and try and portray it in it's gloomy November clothes.

  11. You really know how to pick stunning scenery to stay in. You couldn't get water any calmer than you found.

    1. Red, the A708 is a wonderful road. Most of it was shrouded in fog but at least it cleared for a while.

  15. Superb reflections on your journey.
It's probably been about six years since I was last in Melrose, potentially the best feel and my most favourite place in the area, but somehow when I go, it always feels like it has been better in the past.
