NEW SHOES. (05/12/14)

I’m still waiting for the camper but I suspect it went for the test today as when I called at the workshop it wasn’t there.

Ali and Darcy had new shoes.

Darcy and Carole. Carole is the one with the wellies on.

_MG_1056          Off with the old.

_MG_1061          A pedicure. This is Ali’s hoof.

Ali is my favourite horse here. He’s seventeen hands and an ex policeman. He got the sack halfway through his policeman training for being a fool. He must have been very foolish. He is a bit skittish but only knocks me about gently, he doesn’t kick or bite; he nibbles a bit, that’s my fault I carry apples and carrots. I have been told a hundred times that they are not pets and that I’m not to feed them. Apparently it encourages them to search folk in their best bib and tucker at shows for food. He is a lovely lad. Alf used to play with him but we have discouraged such tomfoolery. It was bound to end in tears. Alf still takes him a stick to play with but Alf is a bit thick like Ali and can’t understand that dropping a stick in front of a horse doesn’t tempt it to play.

_MG_1062        Fitting the new. This is my favourite bit. Lots of smoke, very exciting.

I had to go into town before the farrier had finished so missed the nailing on.

It’s been another cool but sunny day. Snow looks likely over the next few days so camper van allowing I’ll head up onto Rannoch Moor for some winter landscapes.

Have a great weekend.

  1. Rannoch Moor? Wasn't she that page three model? Looks a bit like Michaela Strachan but younger? Reputedly she is quite frigid so you'll need your thermals on.

    1. YP, I imagine myself irresistible in my long johns, wellies and Sherpa hat.

  2. Alf and Mol didn't show any curiosity?

    1. R. Mac, they love eating the bits of hoof but it bungs them up so I shut them away. Alf will try and tempt horses to play with a stick. He can't work out why they aren't interested.

    1. Gary, it's not bad. I was trying to do two jobs at once so my mind was only half on the horses.

    1. Chris, it is a regular occurrence here. I don't know why I've never taken pictures before.

  6. That last smokey photo has a wonderful timelessness. Could have been taken in a bygone age. Really like that.

    1. Red, both these horses are cooperative. It can be a right palava. It is still hard work though.

  8. Good series Adrian. Always interesting watching these craftsmen at work.

I can never understand the fascination dogs have for the offcuts of horses feet. The two in Wales where I stay love it too.

    1. Keith, they love them. If they have too many bits they get constipated so I put mine in the house.

  9. I came South through Ranoch Moor last week in the dark and rain. It wasn't as appealing as it is on a crisp winter's day with blue skies and snow capped mountains. Good luck. I'm going home via the Cairngorms.

    1. Graham, Rannoch Moor can be magical but also the opposite.
