MORE OF THE SAME (01/10/11)

Another warm day but a bit hazy. I was out early looking for owls. Needless to say I couldn't find them so it’s a few more fungi and a moth.

The fungi are suffering in this mini heat wave so I suspect that at long last I may be nearing the end of them. Not before time in all probability.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   I posted this yesterday. I checked on it this morning and it had all but evaporated. It wasn’t broken just a tenth of this size………….amazing what happens.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA     I really don’t know…………..Honey Fungus?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA    Brown Roll Rim………………….or it could be something else.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA    An Amanita of some sort?…………….Possibly The Blusher……..It looks almost brand new.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA      I don’t know. It’s not a Puff Ball it has gills.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA      An almost perfect Fly Agaric…………these are really plentiful this year.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA I’ve never seen this one before and it is not in my book. Attractive little thing it is.

I’ll upload these to Wild About Britain and wait for a genius from there to give me a clue.

I shall miss going out mushrooming, coming back reading the fungi book and being none the wiser. Entertaining things. Tomorrow I’m away to find a Green Woodpecker I've spotted it twice but it was too quick for me.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

  1. Hi Adrian, you've done it again, another set of images to test out the brain in the powers of Fungi ID!....I love it!......glutton for punishment or what?

Here's my best estimate, and we know what estimates are like!

Fungi 1 - Tiered Tooth (hericium cirrhatum) and my book says uncommon to rare!...maybe you've found something special! ( And the coin is £1 sterling worth about 75pence in today's money , if you're lucky!)

    Fungi 2 - Honey Fungus

    Fungi 3 - Brown Rollrim

Fungi 4 - A 'young' Grey Spotted Amanita ( amanita excelsa var. spissa)

Fungi 5 - Possibly?...A very damaged 'young' Shield Dapperling (lepiota clypeolaria)

    Fungi 6 - Fly Agaric

And finally the mystery moth which I reckon is an Angle-striped Sallow (enargia paleacea)... an immigrant!.... so my book says!

As I said before this is just my best guesstimate and may not stand up to close scrutiny!!

All great images btw, It's surprising how rolling around in the dirt can be so enjoyable!

Good luck with the Green Woodpecker!...[;o)

  2. Trevor many thanks. The first is most odd. it seems to have disappeared into thin air. I can't find it on Wild About Britain. Well done. The shield Dapperling I'm almost sure wasn't there yesterday. Maybe it hates hot weather.
Thank you once again for your help and patience.

  3. I'm ashamed to say that I can add nothing of value to this post. However I am becoming fascinated by all the fungi that you've been finding. "Can I cope with yet another thing to become fascinated by" I ask myself.

  5. It's been a scorcher here again today.
I've seen very little fungi locally and have only seen one Fly Agaric. Earthballs and Birch Polypore have been around for weeks but I have seen little else.
Another lovely post to read...great images.

  6. The second pic reminds me of some photos I took a while back and have not posted yet. Must try and find them... You've really found some impressive fly agarics.

  7. With all the heat, the edible mushrooms should be already cooked ;) You are certainly finding a wide variety ~ If you are looking for owls, it might be an idea to look up rather than down ;)

  8. Graham, I spend an hour a day pouring over the fungi book. It takes almost as long to guess what they are as to find them.

Bob, Thanks I'm finding them fun.

Andrew, Thanks. It's very good here.

Monica, The Fly Agaric have really done well here.

Glo, I can hear the owls but can't find their roosts. I'll look up today. Thanks.

  12. Hilary, If you see the fly Agaric don't eat it or you will be flying......It's hallucinogenic!

John, Fungi hunting is not cheap.

CJ, this weather is not helping but the summer fungi are coming back again. Fly Agaric, Stink Horn. f it rains now it could still be a bumper year.
