WET, WET, WET. (19/12/11)

This is going to be a quick post. It is raining and doesn’t show any sign of stopping. It was reasonable but cold first thing. Rain on frost so very slippery.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA        Not this slippery………….these were purchased a year ago and the day after the expense the snow and ice melted. I should have bought a swimming costume.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA     These are the answer on ice. They cost next to nothing and strap to any footwear I am using. Brilliant they are and when they wear down I can just screw another self tapper in. I could if I had any this size but that’s a minor detail.

I was out in the dark and found the deer. I couldn’t get closer than a hundred yards but not to worry. The stag is with these hinds still. I wish I could find them in daylight but they head off into the hills.

These are even noisier than the last ones but they can just about be identified as deer.

I came back in for breakfast and did another Christmas Card.

PC310627_edited-1    Merry Christmas to all of you. I wish this Oystercatcher would learn to fly straight.

I’m hoping for a fine day tomorrow and a look round the gardens here. Have fun.

  1. Adrian...I have looked at those cramp on things many time, but knowing myself I probably would fall anyway..I'm good at that ; }
You would think those deer would be more accommodating..like in daylight and not run ..great try..I had 4 in the backyard just at dusk last week..one false move and there gone!!

  3. When I read that title, I thought, 'allo, he's gone all poppy'.
I like the look of that strap-on. Think I'll invest in something like that myself.
    Nice card.

  5. Wow! crampons and an ice axe, you were expecting some bad weather then?

I guess those deer spot you way before you spot them.....perhaps if you purchase a 'deerstalker' it may help!!

    Another excellent card...[;o)

  6. Grace, these deer are being accommodating....for deer! I skid over all the time. I forget to put them on then forget I haven't put them on.

JoLynne, I spend a good twenty minutes admiring them every time I can get close enough. They can be nasty things though.

Keith, No danger.....Robert Plant is as Popy as I get.
Midmarsh John got something similar but posher. hey are a life saver. One can trot along ignoring the ice.

Hilary it wants reworking but thanks.

  7. Trevor, I have them for the hills. Never used them yet. I lost my old axe and the crampons were long past their best so I got new in George Fischer. The plastic things were a fiver from one of the fleecy, rubbishy outdoor shops. They are very effective.

  8. I have a pair of the rubber ones - though less sophisticated - which my Mum gave me many years ago. As I've hardly ever seen snow on Lewis since the early '80s they are still waiting to be used.

  9. I do love the deer, but, the Oystercatcher is out of this world.

  10. A serious piece of kit in the first image and brought back some wonderful memories of practising self arrest.
I think the cheaper option is far more practical these days..
It's lovely to see the deer again and the card is lovely to see...
    Take care.

  11. Graham, they are wonderful things.

    Bob, many thanks.

Andrew, I usually carry them in snowy weather in the hills.
    The deer are being cooperative.

    Gillian, many thanks.

  12. It does not seem that we will have a white Christmas and it is fine with me so i hope i wont need the type of equipment you show us! The weather in France is as wet and horrid to that of the UK...and i am fighting my way through an azerty clavier...Keep well and warm and hope you will come closer to the deer soon!
Love your little montage on the last photo!

  13. Happy Holidays! I wish you all the best. I like the way you have captured these elegant animals.

  14. DeeBee. There is no chance of a white Christmas here.
Are French keyboards not QWERTY? Never knew that.

Olga, Merry Christmas to you. I need some light on the deer.

  15. The first looks like a serious piece of kit, more like you are into rock climbing. Wise to have some extra traction in icy weather. We don't tend to bounce as well as we did when kids - further to fall as well.

    Merry Christmas to you also.

  18. I have a few varieties of those kinds of anti-slip-devices too. Should be set for all kinds of winter weather by now but some days it still seems one doesn't have the right tools to tackle it! - Good job with the Christmas card!
