I GET DAFTER. (14/04/13)

I have had a busy week. Last Tuesday I went to the bird place and on the way we passed Maplin. I wanted a pack or two of their AA batteries, the batteries are cheap but very good. I also wanted a pack of those thin wires with alligator clips on. I forgot the latter but did end up getting a weather centre. I was going to make one with the Arduino but they had one for £39.95p…..I could see me buying all the bits and then it failing so I succumbed to temptation.

I have spent an interesting couple of hours sorting it all out. It’s a grand bit of kit.IMG_0117 copy    It works. The pressure needs setting but that will be easy for me as I have to go back to Darlington for three wheel bearings. The truck had her service, a bit of exhaust and one bearing but I couldn’t find the other three….they are on order. I will park next to the airport and ask him in the control tower for the pressure. This is a wireless display. I’m impressed I got it going with only a few …..WELL I’LL BE BLOWED!s…I usually have to swear at such things for hours. P.Shop CS6 is now starting to behave. I’m going to love it.

IMG_0115 copy     Here it is doing what it is supposed to. I will have to remember to take it down when I move. The bit of black stick is part of an old bird feeder I found. I am impressed with it. They do a much posher one that will talk to the laptop but that is the thick end of £100.00p. I can buy a few notebooks and pencils for £60.00p.

IMG_0097_edited-1  I came back to Sheriff Hutton because a fellow Old Age Traveller has just acquired this fine MG Midget. It is a beauty and the chap he got it from will store it with his car collection in the winter.

I’m waiting for rain to see if the rain gauge works and the wind to die down then I’ll go back to Duncombe Park this week for more bird pictures. By next weekend I should be in Scotland for the summer.

Yesterday’s paper was wall to wall Lady Thatcher. I wish I hadn’t bought it……I couldn’t finish the crossword but did manage the Sudukos so it wasn’t a total waste of a couple of pounds.

I did get a sympathetic e-mail regarding the demise of Maggie the Witch.

EVERYONE JUST SHUT UP!………LET THE IRON LADY RUST IN PEACE.

Have a good week.

  1. That certainly is a fancy gadget Adrian.
I could tell it was windy and raining here by looking outside; but I didn't know what the pressure was. I gauged the rain as heavy, judging by the mud here.

    I need more Bells. :-)

    1. Keith, it is a bit over the top. It says that it is going to be cloudy, sunny and a bit rainy today.
I wish I had some Bells.

  4. Another wonderful post Adrian, and the weather station looks like a neat bit of kit. I have to admit I am a bit like Keith and just take the weather as it comes... but I don't travel around like you. Re the Robin pics the lens is still a Sigma but with a bit more reach a 150-500mm.

    1. Andrew, I had the 150mm-500mm. With plenty of sunshine it is a good lens....I found it best at around 400mm.

  5. "Iron Lady rust in peace". Wonderful! I wish I'd thought of that.

How in heaven's name did you find that piece of equipment for that price? I am envious. When I bought mine (some years ago I admit) it was far more expensive (but then things often get cheaper as they get more popular) but what's really bugging me is that I paid more than that last year to replace the bit which transmits the signal from the sticky up things outside the house to the box inside.

Love the MG Midget. I had a red one just like it when I was a young and carefree chap. Actually we went on our honeymoon in it. Couldn't have had much luggage. Not that that mattered.

    1. Graham, I wish I'd thought of Rust in Peace.

Maplin are a good shop but not good for ones wallet. Whenever I go in I come out with things I don't need.

The Midget is a little gem.

  6. I have looked at the weather centers a few times. they interest me. However, I have a few more priorities before I get a weather center.

    1. This one was only purchased as it looked too cheap to leave.

  7. I must admit to having been regularly tempted by a weather centre when passing through Maplins. I've managed to resist so far, mostly as I will want one that talks to the PC and they are always that little bit more expensive.

    1. Mark, it is a great shop. It has so many fascinating things I don't need but they are cheap enough to tempt me.

The talk to the PC one I saw cost about £100.00.

  8. Enjoy the weather station Adrian. I used to use Maplin a lot years ago. It is possible to get a station which plugs in a USB port for less than a ton but I am sure that your present one will do the job. I find mine is more accurate than the 'local' forecast at predicting rain - not perfect but better. It normally gives several hours notice.

You will have to put a sticky note on the steering wheel - "Take the doodah down".

I have a bit of rope on the gear lever.

  9. Nice to have your own weather station, it'll save you some time looking it up elsewhere. Maybe I might have to wait a month or two before your van comes up on the BBC weather search engine :-)
