THE SPEAR. (17/08/13)

This morning we were up withe the Lark, I took the dogs a quick walk and after packing we trundled off in a south easterly direction on the A832 towards Kinlochewe.

_MG_1124_5_6_tonemapped  I knew there was something missing in my life. I’d got both dogs, the wind speed was showing zero on the weather station so I’d fetched that in. I had a pair of jeans on….I’d remembered to get dressed. After four miles I realised I hadn’t had breakfast so stopped at the side of Loch Bad an Sgalaig.  The dogs thought we had arrived at our destination and despite my cursing and swearing would not be gainsaid. Jacket back on and out into the rain. Half an hour later I managed a couple of Wheetbix and a yogurt. I’ve stopped buying those posh proactive ones. I just get the low fat Greek yoghurt. I’ll give the dairyman pro-active-bio whatever; I thought I’d contracted dysentery. There should be a health warning on the stuff.

I’ll tell you now it was a wild, wet and windy journey. I was relieved that the road is a good one and for the most part two lane. After eight miles or so I hit the shore of Loch Maree, found a layby and strolled out into the elements to get the photographs I came here for.

_MG_1127_8_9_fused      Apart from the Rowan trees fruiting there wasn’t much to see so I backtracked a couple of miles.

_MG_1130_1_2_fused      This was better. It wasn’t really this bright but I can’t help trying to show the positive side of life. By this time the lens cloth was useless; soaking wet and a bit grubby. I think I found all the rain drops but if I’ve missed one well such is life.

_MG_1160      This is a bit of Slioch, in English it means spear.

I’m here for six days but by the time you read this you will know that. There is no internet here but there is a phone signal.

I’ll see what tomorrow sends my way.

  1. Adrian, I had worried something was wrong. Glad to see you posting again!

I don't have any words to describe the first two pictures. They are great, can't imagine how you got them. They're kind of scary. We have tornadoes and I would be expecting some very bad weather if I looked out and saw that.

I like number 3 but I love number 4. In it the colors suit me better and also like seeing the shoreline and the bit of land next to it.

    1. David, I expected internet as I had booked onto a Caravan Club site and I thought they all have WiFi now. Kinlochewe doesn't.

It is bad weather but not dangerous unless you are stuck up a mountain and my days of getting up mountains are long gone.

On a good day it is purported to be one of the best views in Scotland is number four.

  2. Good to see you back.
The first shot is a lovely, moody one. Looks like all hell's being let lose.
A fine spot you've chose to stay at. Hope the rain holds off a bit though.

    1. Keith all hell was being let loose. What with the weather and my cursing....I don't know why I bother, the dogs take no notice.

  3. Ditto on seeing you back. Glad you didn't fall off a cliff or into a loch or something.
Great images, love the third one.
That helpful yogurt should be outlawed.. been there, done that.
    Happy travels, my friend.

    1. Michelle, Yorkshire is the best place in the UK so enjoy your holiday there. Scotland is a close second for scenery but most towns are a bit depressing.

  5. Pretty amazing landscape you are experiencing! Nice job getting the shots. The wet and humid weather caused me issues during my time in Guatemala! Looks like a great place to get lost and the perfect place lacking WIFI:)

    1. Chris, it's grand. The wet is a problem.
I quite enjoyed a lazy week without the internet, a good pub would have made it perfect.

  7. This landscape has certaintly changed. It looks more rocky with more vegetation.

    1. Maria, it is possibly a unique landscape in that the older rocks which are Torridon Sandstone lie on top of the younger quartz and volcanic rock. Torridon Sandstone I seem to remember is 800,000,000 million years old.

  9. I really like all of the images as it looks like another great spot. However the first three images to my eyes looks like it's telling their own story. The first two, some moody weather coming in and in the third the moody weather leaving and a hint of some brightness coming in....probably :)

    1. Douglas, it's been a damp week but I have some more images to sort. Not many....I had an idle week.
There were breaks in the cloud but they were few and far between.

  10. Wild and remote, with no Internet. My kind of place :) Great images. I reckon I can feel the cold, wet, windy weather that you describe.

    1. Laura, it's dramatic. I was hoping for no wind and a few clouds in a clear sky.

  12. It's a great shame that the weather has misbehaved for your trip to Loch Maree. I had great hopes that you would be Really Impressed. As it is I think Just About Impressed may be the most I can hope for. Hey ho. That's Scotland for you.

  13. Graham, I have a few issues with Highland Scotland. Planning being the major one. There doesn't seem to be any policy or planning, they plan for sewage, electricity and fresh water so it's not quite third world. The towns are like a scrapyards. Folk trash a bit of land then pop up a new timberframe next to the old mess. The villages and towns are a touch depressing.
The weather is just weather, it can't be controlled but it can be embraced. I'm going back to Loch Maree and really fancied a slow wander up both Ben Eighe and the pony track that runs towards Torridon. It's a great place.
    As you say that's Scotland.
