DRIP, DRIP, SPLASH. (30/12/13)

It’s been a very wet day. I took the dogs out at eight this morning and it was still dark. It took them ages to do the necessary so the van now stinks of wet towel, wet jacket, wet overtrousers. The stink from the dogs is beyond description. A friend was going to Sainsbury at Newton Stewart. It’s the nearest big shop. It’s sixteen miles away. I went with him and did the provisioning I should have done before Christmas were it not for the confabulation caused by the hundred and fifty mile detour I had over the lack of winter tyres.

We have had an inch of rain since midnight less three hundredths of an inch. I’m pleased with the forty pound weather station I found in Maplin last March. It is within  few hundredths of a decimal place of Rusty’s. He owns this campsite and had a man from the Met office to check his as he is an official satellite weather station. I can’t recall what the Met. Office call him I’ll ask again if anyone is interested in being one of them.

_MG_2533 The water gets closer. I am glad I found this site. It’s one of the best I’ve been on. It may flood but only for a minute or so at high water and I’m assured not then. Three pigs were sharing their bit of paddock with a Swan this morning. Pigs don’t like rain anymore than I do so they had stopped in bed.

_MG_2535The burn is doing it’s best to rid the rain. If you think these pictures are a little washed out you are correct. I did them like this because today has been a washout.

I’m hoping to do a painting with light New Year card tomorrow. If I fail then all the best for 2014.

  1. If this weather keeps up Adrian you might need to fit a floatation collar to the van, or invite those pigs in from their slumbers to add a bit of weight and stop it floating away!
Did Rusty get his name because it's always wet around there?...sorry couldn't resist!
    Stay safe...and dry...[;o)

    1. Trevor, the water level has dropped a bit but it's started raining again. I'll just drive up the hill a bit. I'm not having any more animals in the van.
Rusty is rotting along with the rest of us.

  4. I like that first shot of the van; looks huge, and clean.

Had a lot of rain here this morning, but I didn't measure it. My garden is looking like a paddy field at the moment.
Rather fitting since I have some Irish blood.

  5. I kind of like that washed out look. It is how outdoors looks to me in Winter. It also made the van and water look good.

Maybe you will have a day soon when you can open the windows and doors on the van and let it air out. For me the problem is not the smell but cat hair. There's enough to make someone a nice wig but it would probably look a little odd.

    1. David, everything is damp. I'll put the aircon on if it gets any worse.I'm bald and I look odd. You aren't supposed to wear the whole cat.

    1. Cat, having lived at sea for years I like living in tiny places. I can shift a hundredweight of camera gear for a lady. I like the life.

  7. Is your camper-van amphibious like "Supercar"? I should check the outboard motor if I were you. And have you got three life jackets? Two of them should be terrier sized.

    1. YP, I did check that it would fire up and drive to higher ground. We only just got out of Newton Stewart as the police were coming to close the road. No worries Scottish shit smells much the same as English as the manhole covers lift.

    2. PS. Molly has a harness from my days on the Dart Ferry. I'll look it out.

  8. Sometimes (nearly always for me being a non-thinker) trying to find something appropriate, witty or just different to say on your posts is quite hard. Particularly one so moderate and reasonable as this one. Where's the rant?

    1. Graham, it was a wet and boring day. Why should you find it different? I'm waiting to vent my spleen on the New year Honours list.

  9. It seems you're very close to needing an ark rather than a van... I hope you manage to stay on firm ground into the new year, Adrian!

    1. Monica, I had half my life at sea. The sea crippled me. I'll just fire up the van and head to higher ground.

  10. I guess in times like these it's good that you can just sit behind the wheel and drive off :)

  11. That looks awfully wet! The stream is very close to your spot. I hope the guy knows what he's talking about and that you won't get wet.

    1. Red, Rusty has been here for eight years. He has built a trout pond and much water management into the place. It's like a miniature polder. I trust him.

  14. Been some really bad weather recently. I was west of Oxford on a few days organised walking trip, more lakes, less fields, managed 3 miles on afternoon of day 2.
