BIG BOYS TOYS (TWO) (27/09/10)

First the answer to the poser, it was unusual in that it was a prize quiz. The thing about that bit it was a prize quiz without a prize.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA     It is a mangle. A Bakers Patent Box Mangle to give it it’s full title. If you look carefully then you can just see the towel above the machine bed, the weighted box is supported on wooden rollers an traverses the washing squeezing out the water. Yes the drum in the foreground does look like a butter churn but I suspect it is the washing machine. Wonderful. A little scary though. Had I invented it and been called Baker I would have borrowed my neighbours name.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA It is not without it’s quirks and foibles. Poor chap was coaxing it to perform every time I passed so I couldn’t glean anymore information on it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA A painful method of locomotion.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   Portable saw bench, hardly Black and Decker but a vast improvement on the saw pit especially for the chap in the pit.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA I really can’t decide who was better turned out or the more interesting the owner or his Monowheeled Mower.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA    Steam always steals the show for me and these miniature traction engines are superb.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA The extension on the smoke stack is temporary, he is just getting up steam and will discard it once he has enough to spare to inject into the base of the chimney.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA     They are works of art.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA       A Ferguson with caterpillar tracks.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA       A Case with mower on what  I belief are called spade lug wheels.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA      A Fordson Standard. The owners must love this one, a cracking example. There were almost two hundred tractors on display and no I didn’t photograph them all! Had I known how extensive this rally was I would have gone for the complete weekend. It would have saved much head scratching.

We are of up into Weardale tomorrow so I’m hoping the weather improves.

  1. The mind boggles at having that portable mangle draw up outside the front door on washing day ;)

Great series of shots showing the detail and workmanship on the miniature traction engines.

There are a couple of the standard version of those old grey Fergies in use around the village here. They were built to last.

  2. John the Grey Ferggie is still alive and kicking. most are diesel now but I believe earlier models were TVO. The minature engines are a grand sight.
As for the mobile laundry...It defies my imagination.

  4. Matron, You well could have but for the insanity of it's designer. It doesn't reflect too well on the mental state of the purchaser either.

  5. nice lot of photos.for some reason only known to google I could not get into your comments yesterday not that I knew what the contraption was;- I was going to say some sort of butter making machine;- and i realy should have known what it was because they had a wash barrel the same in penmachno woolen mill, that worked off the pulleys that ran off the water race turbine.
shall hopefully be in the steam museum CAIRO ON WEDNESDAY, and will most likely blog in the evening.

  9. Tony,I look forward to a trip round Cairo Steam Museum. All I know about Massey is that they are Canadian.

Linda, they are like little jewels to me.

Glo, They still build them. Last time I checked a good one will cost £16K or more. Expensive toys.

  12. Lucy most shows are giant markets, this one had that element but it didn't dominate and I ignored it anyway.

Keith, It boggles the imagination. I did too was brilliant.

  13. A mangle? Said with the best voice that Lady Bracknell could muster.

Some splendid tractor variations there too.

  14. GB, more variation than I could cope with. All presented so well. These does are always good value. It's called enthusiasm.
