THE PROSPECTOR (29/12/10)

I got in a bit late last night. Went to the pub quiz as I was feeling in a sociable mood…….very good it was and we almost won…….would have done were it not for the five teams that came in front of us.

Got back to the truck with Molly’s help………….good job she knows where we are parked only to find the service batteries were dead. Impossible for me to fathom after an emotional and testing quiz so called it a night and went to bed. A blown fuse so easily fixed in the cold light of day.

We set off for a walk in surprisingly good weather. The light was eerie a peculiar golden sheen to everything. I found it most appealing, wasn’t sure whether to blame the beer at first but it was real enough, the camera doesn’t lie……………mine does a bit………..all these images have had a gentle prod in the golden direction.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA     Low cloud and mist rolling from the fells into the estuary greeted us.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   The Oystercatchers were already into their breakfast………..there seem to be more everyday but they are not the tamest of birds.

Then we really struck gold………………………..

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   Or Goldeneye……. Male Goldeneye.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  We wandered round the corner and I felt like King Midas there were another half dozen.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Three flew off………………

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA I got a bit closer to the sociable ones…………..made my day they have.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA What a racket, Canada Geese from the din they were making. Not landing here but someone's winter barley is in for a shock.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAs we turned for home a rainbow appeared and was reflected in the creek………….A magical morning…….I feel a sunset just around the corner. It looks like being a good day.

Sometimes I wonder why I bother with the forecasts………….supposed to be drizzly and foggy today. It is much better than that.

  1. Isn't it great to see all those geese in the air like that? No matter how many times I see them flying, I always have to stop and watch. A great spectacle.
Great shots of the Goldeneye too. Love the flight ones.
Certainly was a 'golden' day Adrian.

  2. Beautiful waterfoul. Did you mend, whatever it was, this morning?

  3. Keith, a superb day after all the dull ones. Amazing what the repaired lens is capable of. This is a grand spot but very open so difficult to get close to the duck. Took some bread but they weren't interested. It was a bit dark, should have practised settings on the Oyster Catchers first.

Bob, yes just a fuse......easy when I woke up and was free of the affluence of incohol.

  4. Going by your photos Adrian, it must have been a magical day indeed! The first photo' has the atmospheric quality of an old postcard.... if you know what I mean. It's lovely. I love to see - and hear - geese flying overhead. They do make a racket, don't they.... it's great. :D Those birds with the white cheek patches look comical, but very pretty. :)

  5. You did not have to wait long for your goodies Adrian.

I reckon the teams that finished in front of you did not have two dogs on the team list.
Who scored the most...you, Molly or Alfie?

  6. Pleased to hear all is mended. Your early morning scene looks almost Constable-ish to me. There is an old fashioned romantic quality to it!

  7. Lesley, it was much better than I was expecting. Old postcard by an old postcard maker. The Gooldeneye are little beauties.

Trevor, lucky again......I've only ever seen one before so I was chuffed. The quiz was not a resounding success but it was a night out.

Pauline, me coming through in the picture I'm an old romantic.

  8. For me the three flying ducks is The Photo of the post. But then I grew up in the time when three flying ducks was all the rage.

  9. Graham, plaster of paris I seem to recall and hunting scenes for the very posh folk.

  10. Some nice shots here, I particularly like the three taking off and the sunset, but I love the commentary. What I don't like is the way that the weather has turned out... anyway, maybe I wasn't meant to go to the lakes as I had issues to sort out here yesterday.

  11. We have had a couple of mornings with that eerie glow. In the past I have always associated it as a portend of snow.

  12. Angie, thanks......there is just nowhere to hide out there so everything is shot at long range.

Jay, I was dreading the return of normal winter. I was thinking of going to Wasdalehead but a waste of time in this weather.

John, they were snow clouds, it was sleeting on the tops. I did push the yellow channel by upping the white balance to 9000K or so.
