SNOLLYGOSTER. (25/12/12)

A Snollygoster is a dishonest man who holds public office. It’s a very old word but how it fell into disuse is a mystery. We have hundreds if not thousands of them in the UK and it is much more fun than Lying Bastard!

I woke this morning and checked my e-mail. I only had the one and it was a Christmas greeting from my old tax dodging friend  the Artful Dodger at Amazon. He had books for £0.99p….not many…. this one was £1.20p. A bargain none the less. It’s The Horologicon by Mark Forsyth. I had a quick and clumsy skim through it….The Kindle is not much use for flicking through books……Unless I’m missing something. Be useless for cookery books. I can see The Horologicon providing plenty of entertainment and illumination.

I took the dogs a walk at first light…..not that there was much light.

IMG_4227_edited-1      My first proper snap taken with the Canon. I have a half dozen earlier ones mainly of my knee, foot and random bit’s of furniture…..It went off now and again whilst I was trying to set it up.

IMG_4228_edited-1    A miserable morning, raw cold and very wet.

We all got back, the Canon has survived the rain so that is a bonus. It is going to take some sorting. It has so many tricks it can do. It has two positions for the ON switch……not sure what that is about. I like the auto focus it is quick and has three settings . One of which locks it on a moving subject without my input. It can’t however lock on two moving subjects so the dogs running will have to be shot one at a time or at f16 and up.

I had a massive fried breakfast…….now I’m still too full for my Christmas dinner. I got a Pheasant. It will still be fine for tomorrow.

I made the dogs dinner.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   Two of these…..rice and chicken with scrambled egg and a sausage each. It took ten minutes to make and a minute to disappear. Alf's went down so fast it bounced on the end of his tummy and shot straight back…he ate it again and this time it stayed put. Greedy, revolting little devils.

IMG_4251_edited-1    The dogs need a haircut…..I’ll get them clipped in Scotland.

Enjoy the rest of the holiday.

  1. Have a great Christmas Adrian; what's left of it.
Glad the camera is performing. The dogs dinner look good. I had steak. God knows how I managed to cook it, the Bells is ringing loud and clear. Tasted Ok though.
Soon be back to some sort of normal.

  2. I've run out of Bells. I did get two bottles when it was on special offer. Bloody stuff has evaporated.
I'm happy with the camera. I am thinking of forgetting the Hasselblad and getting a couple more lenses for this. I have three custom settings I can use when I find out how. Once they are set and I get magic lantern installed i'll be away with the fairies. Sounds like sleet on the roof now.
You have a good Boxing Day....I don't mind rain tomorrow. It will dampen the ardour of the silly buggers in pink off out to annoy foxes.

  3. Snollygoster - a new one on me but definitely added to my vocabulary.
I have a feeling that Penny could easily break the 1 minute record for sucking down a meal - can't call it eating when it doesn't touch the sides ;)
Enjoy the pheasant, whenever you get round to it.

    1. It's an entertaining book and will provide post titles for some considerable time. Snollygoster....It could become overused. There are few days go by when it couldn't be applied to less than three folk and that's those on Radio 4 before 9am
John....I really don't know why they spend so much time breeding and rearing Pheasants when they don't want to eat them.

    1. I hope yours was magical. It can so easily be a disappointing day.
Dog haircuts are expensive...Having tried to style them myself with the horse clippers I now leave it to the experts. My styling was unique.

  6. How a dog that is so cute could eat upchucked food? oh, well it probably went down just as fast the 2nd time!
    Happy 1st day of Christmas!

  7. I started reading this hours ago and got sidetracked on Snollygoster and wondering whether CJ has the book. Came back from town (stinking cold - needed more tissues) and resumed tales of the undigested. You really are good value Adrian, you really are. I shudder to think what Bells is here - the cheapest stuff is around $40. Which is good because I'm on the whisky macs until this cold goes away. It's one of the perks of a head-cold - the only one.

    1. It's all just tales from the loony van....sorry 'Special Needs' van.
A litre of Bells is normally around £17/£18. The last I got was £15.00p. I got two but they have both leaked away. Comes from getting cheap bottles! Hope you recover soon

  8. I like the sound of your new book, The Horologicon. Snollygosters is a great word; even could be used as a polite expletive! The word also had me wondering about anagrams. Trolley Songs, and here's 700+ more ;)

A very tasty dish to set before each Scottie, and quite apt that they will be trimmed when you advance farther north.

I'm glad you are enjoying your new camera :)

  9. Glo, I love it. Lots of words that are new to me and that's without anagrams.
They get a special tea twice a year at birthday and Christmas. It's always chaos as I use a crumpet ring to mould the rice. I only have to get the rings out and I'm plagued to distraction.
It's a fine piece of kit.

  10. Snollygosters is a fine word, can be used for those that have a clever mind and that have no brain, in other words, the cabinet.

  11. The dogs dinner actually looks really good, and has made me hungry! Words for people like that eh? I made the big mistake of commenting on a forum about the 300 Boxing Day foxhunts happening today....BIG mistake, and I didn't even use a swear word. Are you still in a house?Enjoy the rest of your day.

  12. We do the same here with our cats....haircuts!!! Otherwise it's hair EVERYWHERE! The Canon is what I use for my shots....mostly use manual as all the critters move quickly. As for Kindle, it's great for reading but like you mention, tricky when your trying to thumb through the book and reread a spot. They say highlight...but I have yet to find the usefulness of the feature. However, I will say this.....while traveling, it's great as it is light and can download books from anywhere. Stay warm!
