ANOTHER LOOK ROUND. (23/06/13)

It has been a funny week. The light has been very flat. Considering it’s only dark for a few hours I was hoping that with twenty hours of daylight to play with I’d have had more fun.

_MG_0741   Molly soaking wet and soaking up the sun. Why I bother sitting waiting for Otters whilst leaving the dogs to splash about I don’t quite know. The chap parked next door to me got some wonderful photographs of them…..He doesn’t have dogs and threatened my two with red hot, rusty, barbed wire when they tried to follow him.

flodabaypan2   This is the fresh water Loch they live in.

_V0G6901_2_3_tonemapped   This is or I hope is what remains of a Shetland Yole. These are descended from the Norse Longboats and still used in the Shetland Isles.

_V0G6896  Boat Builder.

_V0G6897  A pity that he abandoned this project.

_MG_0750  This is a whatever I guess I’ll guess wrong. In for a penny. The Azure Damsel Fly.

_MG_0763   This is Dwarf Milkwort. There is an awful lot of it about. this is about 3x life size. I really enjoy tiny flowers. Pity I'm never sure what I'm looking at.

Tomorrow I’m catching the afternoon ferry back to Ullapool. Then heading further north.

I’ll do some more catching up and in the meantime have a good week.

  1. A great pity the weather won't play ball for you Adrian. Some many interesting things to photo and the flat lighting doesn't do them justice.

    1. John, it's the way of things. It's a pity it's so awkward to get to.

  2. Despite your poor light, I enjoyed the 'boat builder', and pictures either side.
Sounds like a miserable git next door to you.
    Have a good trip tomorrow.

    1. Keith, he was fine. He lent me a couple of extension tubes for Bertha. The weather is very variable here. I could do with stopping for a month. It's only seven miles to the shop but it takes an hour to do the return trip and longer on bin day.

    The place is abandoned.

    1. Peter, number three is okay but lacks drama. It is photogenic but off camera flash in the right hands could really give it some punch.

    2. Silly me. Off camera flash would be in nobodies hands. I can't afford an assistant.

  6. Lovely spot and those boat bones and remains are wonderful subjects. The place we just bought is reputed to have otters.. I just can't wait.

  9. You're getting some stunning pictures on that island, Adrian. Interesting about the Yole. Never heard that word before but it must be related to the Swedish word "jolle" for a small rowing boat or ship's boat. Anyway I really like the picture. The remains of the boat seems to have taken on the colours of the landscape.

  10. Monica, they are a beautiful boat. They row them and sail them with a square sail. They come from your end of the world and are almost perfect.

  11. Hi Adrian, most of the time I really like flat lighting, those heavy shadows on bright days can be very frustrating. Flat or soft light is the best for portraiture. Sounds like your have the time of your life up there in Scotland. Take care my friend, have a wonderful week. We are under flood watch here in Edmonton. we have had rain here everyday for almost 3 weeks. Southern Alberta is flooding all over the place. Glad your have great weather.

    1. Horst, flowers and people look better in flat light but landscapes look grand with bright light and fast moving clouds.

  12. Considering that I live on Lewis even I would find that part of Harris too remote to stay for very long.

  13. Adrian, Molly is adorable. How in the world do you find the names of wildflowers? Do you simply know them, or do you have a guide?

    1. Maria, I have a book, that can usually get me close enough to consult the internet. After that if I've guessed wrong then usually one of my readers will put me right.

    2. I also got a book on wildflowers recently, and I think not even that covers them all. I still find I'm covering the popular ornamental blooms simply because there are so many in the urban area where I am right now.

  14. Looks like after hanging around with you for so long, Molly has finally learnt to pose. I like the look of the Yole, but not as a boat.

  16. Only just beginning to catch up with where folk are but I immediately recognised the half-built boat. You're on THE Island - well - the other half of THE Island. Whose silly idea was it to name the top half of an island one thing and the bottom half another? Where was the yole? GPS location to GB for my next visit, please.

  17. It's opposite the unfinished boat on the other side of the road. Are you going abroad this summer?
Lewis/Harris/South Harris. They did it on Sunday whilst God was having a rest.

  19. Hi Adrian,
Sorry I missed you when you were on the island. It would have been nice to have said "hello". P'raps next time. I knew that the longer you stayed here the more you would like it. It is something the locals put in the water - I think! I you like the island in foul weather then you would just love it when the sun shines. Even your pictures are getting better and better!! I like pretty pictures. I really like your dog. We were searching for a Westie when I saw a puppy retriever and ""hey presto" Briagha (Bonnie in English) came to stay. She is pure white - so close!

    Happy clickings. Pat

    1. No worries Pat. I'm back in January. I loved South Harris. I could spend ages with fit totty and six, Give up dreaming Adrian. I only have two flash lights. Okay three if you include me flashing.
That old Yole takes some beating. Could make a for a wonderful if cool fashion shoot. Maybe a big band shoot. 2001 Odyssey was shot not a mile away!
I travel and look. Will be back next year. To look some more. It's the weather mucks things up. Rachel says shoots have to be controlled.
