TRENCH FOOT. (04/10/13)

Everything I touch is damp and smelly. I made a soft box out of cardboard and a pillow case. That has succumbed after yesterdays mushrooming so today I’ve ordered a plastic one from Dorr. I’ve also ordered some coloured gel type things for the strobes.

The rain stopped just after dawn so I kicked the dogs out of bed and we wandered round the top bit of Derwentwater. The light was okay and I even caught a glimpse of blue sky.

  1. Marvellous pictures Adrian! They prove that sharp sunshine and blue skies do not always give the best effects.

    1. YP, I find they very rarely do. If these trees would just turn then it could be wonderful here. I'll see what tomorrow brings.
I've processed these as HDR. I used to like tone mapped images but am going off them a bit.
Thank you for the kind comment.

  3. Peter, it could be a whole lot worse. I'm just hoping for a good dawn or dusk. It can be stunningly beautiful.

  4. You should be careful with what you're touching Adrian, you never know where it's been!

I was once inspired by a Blue Peter program to make a nativity scene using cereal boxes and old loo rolls...that fell to pieces too!!

You've captured some beautiful scenes from your morning walk. #5, I think, is my favourite.

    Enjoy your weekend...[;o)

GP prediction - 1st. Vettel...(disappearing into the distance!)
2nd & 3rd Hamilton and Rosberg after being swapped around by team orders late in the race. And as an outsider Grosjean in the Lotus

    1. Trevor, the chance and ability would be welcome.

I bit the bullet and decided £14.99p was cheap for a wee soft box. I use diffusers. I have stopped using the bottoms of milk cartons because they make me look a cheap skate. They cut too much light. I quite like flash as alight source. I like the way it blacks out the background. I'm looking to get a few coloured backgrounds printed on plastic to use as back drops. They don't have to be very big for macro or micro.
Number five is my favourite. I was lucky to get any.

Vettel, Alonso, Rosberg Is an Outsider. No need to swap them about. Lewis seems to have lost the plot a little. I hope he can come back. I used not to support Vettel but he is a man of magical ability in a field of magicians. He only fights when he has to. He seems to have stopped risking all for a fastest lap on the last lap. He just loves driving. The MotoGP lads are more entertaining but I hate it when they get it wrong. I know how much it hurts.

    2. PS...I'm getting slow.
You should have used the sticky backed plastic.
You had better powers of concentration than I did......I thought they said use old Loo Paper. My nativity scene didn't fall to pieces but it did stink like a stable or the midden at the back of the stable.

    3. Trevor you forgot about the tropical storm that's veering down on the area, so rain will play it's part I'm undecided as yet.

    1. David, They are half decent. I have a really posh landscape lens but it isn't waterproof.
This 50mm prime is better than splash proof and not too bad. The image corners tend to lack sharpness and also if I get thin things like twigs in the corners it does show Chromatic haloing. What the hell, it's only fun.
These are all HDR. I just fancied a trip back in time to my first love in digital photography. High Dynamic Range was used long before digital it's just easier now.
I am a bit of an anorak but have a good weekend.

    1. Andrew, I can do better. It is a great area no matter what the weather. Weekends up here tend to be a bit busy for me. I'll creep off for bird or fungi snapping.

  8. I really like the low cloud formations in all the images, the first image with the dead tree in the foreground and the second to last image with the huge reflection were my favourites.

    1. Douglas, it was a magical hour. Then the rain came back. I guess the centre of the low passed over us as there was no wind at all. I took a load of shots of the second to last and have a single image away to print. I didn't dare risk using the Canon TE lens. Just as well, we got soaked on the way back.

    1. Grace, I've been here three days and the dead tree in the first image I have taken eight times. It's a hard one to crack. I'll keep playing.
It is hellish dull here. the pictures today are rare images of low cloud and mountains. If you don't go out and get wet, trash gear you don't get to snap them. Hark at me, I didn't take a good lens or a tripod.

  10. Adrian, holy $#%^&! You've really got some jaw dropping drooling landscape scenery here. Very very nice!!! My favorite is the second shot! Blow those shots up and sell them!

    1. Chris, they will print at 24" on the long side.
These are HDR so I'd have to print from an original. I'll post some unadulterated ones.

    1. John, they are HDR processed with Photomatix.
Nothing added and nothing taken away.
I then check levels and push vibrance. Some I would process with a little more restraint.

  17. Those magnificent pictures of the fells around Derwentwater make me feel really nostalgic for the days, nay weeks, spent there when I was younger. We used to classify ourselves as Lesser Wetted Hikers or Greater Wetted Hikers but rarely simply as Hikers.

  18. Every one is a gem, it was a pleasure looking a this post. Some of them remind me of a walk I did with friends around the lake back in July this year. It's fantastic to be out early & catch the clouds like this. Needless to say, quality processing as always.
