WHAT A MUDDLE. (29/10/13)

Yesterday we missed the wind but suffered from torrential rain all morning. I decided to make a movie. I thought it would take longer than it did. I had a couple of dozen false starts, false middles and finishes but eventually I got there. I wanted a light source like a softbox round the cross and picture. I can create one but can’t make it invisible to the camera. There is a way but I couldn’t find it.

remberence   This is for Remembrance Day. It is a fortnight early but I thought it would take me longer than it did. This is the final frame and here is the movie.

I rendered all two hundred frames out as png. files then forgot where I’d sent them to. That’s par for the course for me. They turned up eventually and I dropped them into Adobe to create the video as it it is easier than using Blender 3D or I thought so.

I retired for liquid refreshment whilst it rendered, it takes ages to do so that probably goes someway to explaining why I couldn’t find the folder I’d sent them to, too much refreshment. This took hours and hours to render. A proper film must take weeks and I can’t use the computer whilst it’s doing it.

I would have liked a bit of cracking in the base plain but couldn’t make it do it. I’ll work on that little problem.

Don’t forget to buy a Poppy.

  1. It is a thoughtful, good thing you have done. Your Remembrance Day must be the same as our Veterans' Day - November 11.

  2. Great work Adrian, you've invested lots of effort and thought into creating this fitting sentiment.

We can expect a full length feature film any time soon then?...[;o)

    1. Margaret, Blender 3D did it. I just think I'm in charge of it.

  5. I am impressed by your skill and patience. I have the patience but not the skill. C'est la vie. I like the final result but it would have been really good if, instead of ending abruptly and the adverts for more YouTube films coming up, the final picture stayed there for a longer period to enable reflection.

    1. Graham, you are correct. I'll make it a bit longer tomorrow. It should be possible to just duplicate any of the last frames and stick another five seconds or so in.

    2. Graham, I think that's better now. I stuck another two seconds on.

  6. I'm impressed (too - I just realized the word has already been used in other comments!). I had no idea such a short sequence would be that time consuming (if one knows how to do it at all).

    1. Monica, It's a little odd that I detest editing video but can quite happily spend hours in Blender 3D. The rendering was taking about 1.75 minutes a frame. on a 2000 cycle render. I could perhaps have got away with half that and rendered out to Jpeg but I hate Jpegs. For anything but the internet. I'll try Tiff not png files next time but I suspect they are bigger still.
      Impressive....I said that several times..

  7. I like that liquid refreshment takes ages and ages to do. Makes sense . Now the other stuff about the movie makes no sense to me.
    Yes remember those who served.

  9. Adrian I'm going to have to come back to the video, my broadband speed is very slow still since it rained on Monday and keeps buffering, it's my speed and not your editing :o)

  12. Well done. I wouldn't have a clue where to begin. I do have a good clue about our Remembrance Day though and have been wearing my poppy for a few days now.

  13. Adrian, nice movie! Did you finally join the CC Cloud? Or is this just PS CS6 extended? I'm glad you're fine! I heard of that storm you all had!

    1. Okay; I know now, it's the Blender project. Incidentally, that PS CC has me really thinking whether it's worth it or not.

    2. Maria, Creative Cloud is not for me as There are many days when I don't have internet. I just have CS6 Extended and Blender 3D. I am looking at various video editing software or shareware i should say.

    3. Adobe is saying that a CC apps like PS will not depend on the internet to work. It will work offline, as long as you've paid it. There is a free membership for CC which only lets you use 2GB of the Cloud (in which I have no interest whatsoever; I still don't see their point in off-line storage such as a cloud), but this membership is only for using those 2 GB, or for trialing the CC apps (such as PS, illustrator, etc.) I have this membership in one of my computers, and I see I'm getting all the updates for CS6 (with this free CC subscription). I now have to see if this subscription is required to get ALL of CS6 updates, because my other computer (without the free CC subscription), is not urging me to update anymore. This is the Adobe Monster. It means if you don't upgrade, and then get a new camera; you will not get RAW support (unless you use another RAW converter, in order to use PS). They have stopped selling retail boxes of their products, and only kept Elements and Lightroom out of the CC..

    4. Adobe is like a religion. They'll do anything to convert you at the expense of imaging technology. Canon now has the new 70D. This new camera has AF for video. This means that if your subject moves; you no longer have to track focus with the lens. It also has 20 MP. Will Adobe provide RAW support for CS6 users who buy this camera? I've yet to see this. It might, but it might also not. It might require you to buy PS with CC..

    5. Maria, I have CC I haven't paid and I still get updates for CS6. It seems to be working better than I thought it would. I'm thinking of trialling Premier as the video editor in Extended is very basic. This is a blessing in some respects. I noticed they are also about to start offering fonts. I don't know what the cost will be. I use Dafont which is free for personal use.
I imagine that they will support new camera models but I don't know for certain. With CS6 if you convert RAW to TIFF in a third party converter you can still import the TIFF files into the Adobe RAW editor. It is a superb bit of software.

    6. Maria, I have settled for Lightworks as a video editor. It will take some learning but I hope I can make it do the job.

    1. Jay, like most complex software, it is finding the tools that takes most time. The Blender 3D interface is getting a bit crowded.
