THIS AND THAT. (19/06/15)

There is still no real change in the weather. It remains cloudy and warmish but not warm enough for butterflies or dragonflies.

I drew a blank on our first walk so decided to make a little posy for the weekend. The white flowers are White Campion and the orange and red ones are something else.

After breakfast I went to have a look at the willow tree and found these little gems.

Capsid bug nymph. I think I’ll plump for Lygocoris rugicollis as I found some adult ones in the same area yesterday.

I found a clump of this growing on an old straw bale. It’s well past it’s best but I have never seen anything quite like it. I’ll pop out again now and try for some more pictures. It looks slimy but isn’t noticeably so nor does it smell strongly. I will have a look at the various Voveriella but I suspect it is too small.

That’s all for today, have a really good weekend.

  2. Lovely weekend posy Adrian, the something else is...Fox-and-cubs (Pilosella officinarum) ...Strange name for a flower?

Super closeups of the Capsid Nymphs, they really show the details that you wouldn't normally see with the naked eye.

Check out Snowy Inkcap (Coprinopsis nivea (niveus)) They grow on rotting straw/manure and they also mature black and deliquesce. Great shots btw.

Have a good weekend..I hope the weather improves...it's grey and a bit chilly here!...[;o)

    1. Trevor, Fox and cubs, can't say i've noticed it before but I can hardly fail to here. Ankle deep in acres of it. I thought it was a Hawkweed.

The nymphs are gem like and don't hop, skip or jump out of focus.

The Snowy Inkcap was a lucky find I went back an hour and a half later and there was barely a trace of it left. I'll see if it pops up again tomorrow.

    1. Douglas I think there must be wings but I haven't seen one fly.

    2. Douglas, I think the proper bug does have wings and it sort of crawls out of the nymph case. It all seems very complicated.

    1. John I like the first surface mirror and it is proving to be much more durable than I was led to believe. The smaller the insect the better the apparent DOF.

  9. The little green gems are very pretty! It's interesting how some of the critters can be so ugly and others beautiful. Your photos catch it all.

  10. For a minute I thought that last thing was an insect and was about to cancel my holiday, that would be too scarey all together. But I do think the last photo is amazing.

    1. Pauline, I am multi-talented. Not all the revolting things I find are insects. Have a great holiday.
