AN OBSERVATION. (24/10/15)

I was cleaning some lenses yesterday and noticed that they are getting larger, not growing you understand, they are the size they were when manufactured but being made bigger. I have been thinking of switching to a mirrorless system for sometime but I would still keep the Canon for macro as the MP-E 65mm is a gem of a lens. I keep looking at the little Fujis.

This is what I mean.

LENS_Panorama1

Both the first and last lenses cover a standard 35mm frame which is 24mm x 36mm or 864mm2 . The middle one covers a 6 x 4.5 frame or 56mm x 42mm which is 2352mm2. The Zenzanon lens also includes a Sieko leaf shutter which is not an inconsiderable bit of machinery.

Does anyone know the code for squared or cubed (2) (3)?

That’s all for today.

  1. Hi, Adrian. If you're using Microsoft, rather than Apple, put on Num Lock, hold down the Alt key and type 0178 for the ² symbol, or 0179 for the ³ symbol. I've actually done that in this reply, so you'll be able to judge whether it shows up correctly at your end, or not!

  2. Quite a few people have made the switch. I am not sure whether the expense justifies the slight loss of bulk. Perhaps it does.

    1. John, I only buy used and there are lots of Olympus and Fuji cameras for next to nothing.

  3. You've got my curiosity when you ask for a code for squared or cubes. I'll be watching comments for answers.

  4. I was going to save the day with &#0178 (squared superscript) and &#0179 (cubed superscript) but I see that Richard Pegler beat me to the punch.

  5. I guess part of the difference in size #1 & #3 must be that #3 is faster (f1.2 v f1.8). Then possibly the number of glass elements will make a difference which all adds to the bulk and weight.

    1. John yes I agree but can't help but wonder if lens design is really improved by that much. I don't really like Canon lenses with the exception of the MP-E and the tilt shift.

  6. Some of my older Pentax and Tamron lenses are pretty bulky.
