SIDETRACKED. (01/10/15)

I took a macro lens out on the first walk of the day. I did take some fungus pictures but there is nothing new around and what I shot wasn’t as sharp as I could have wished for. These aren’t really crisp but the effect is worth pursuing.

I started out by trying to use the low early sun to backlight the leaves but then realised I had a strobe in my pocket which would give much more control and be a damn sight easier. The second one was a revelation to me as I never realised that the spore thingies on bracken can be seen through the fronds. I was so taken up with this that the focus suffered. I’ll have another go.
Tuesday night the new combine decided to dismantle and destroy her gearbox. It took most of yesterday morning to get to the root of the problem and it is awful news. She has smashed the differential and chewed up the teeth on the final drive gears. This is a big job.

Oh Hum…………Hopefully the next door neighbour will turn up this afternoon and finish off the last six acres with his machine. This will give several months to fix the gearbox and also a brake which is also looking well past it’s best.

  1. Oh dear. That combine looks to becoming an expensive investment.

    1. John, it will just take time to rebuild. They know where there is another similar machine and the box looks okay in it.

  4. It's sad that someone would sell a machine that is in such bad condition.

    1. Red, Caveat emptor. I suspect that the machine was bought rather than sold. It has combined about twenty acres or more so these things are to be expected.

  5. I like the frond shot even if a little blurry. Besides the see-through, there are nice "lines" in it.

  6. A New Holland in Dutch..... (That phrase may be too dated: "In Dutch" meaning in trouble. It's time for my nap.

    1. Bill, it will mend. Harvest finished last night. Just a bit of baling to do.

  7. Ouch! I'm surprised given the probable cost it'd be considered a write off? Where you think the images aren't very sharp I do really like the first image with the droplets.

    1. Douglas, cost is just time. Half a dozen bearings and another used box and it will be as good as new. The rebuild is not difficult.

  8. I like your leaf shots, and never thought of using a flash on them. I'll have to try it.

    1. Linda, I use flash a lot for anything within range. A bit of natural light and mini softboxes work well.

  12. Oh dear, those darn machines, if it's not one thing it's another. Or maybe I should say "It's always something". Here it is my water pump! I'm getting fed up with crawling under the house to press the Reset button.
