PAINLESS. (03/03/16)

Screenshot_2
I now have Windows 10 and I don’t think I did anything. I came back in from our walk and there it was and a nice message from Microsoft saying that they had left all my files where they were. I cannot dispute this as I never know where I’ve put stuff. I can  now ask Cortina or someone. Perhaps he/she will know where things are. I hope so.
It all seems fine and I’ll have a wander around and see what all the fuss is about. I expect things to feel a bit strange at first and Windows 7 was excellent I had no complaints at all. Let us hope 10 is as good and not an XP or Vista experience.
Now to see how much faster it is………..It’s play time.

  1. I had no issues with WIN10 aside from one piece of old hardware that is no longer supported. It was a minor piece, however.

    1. John, it will take a day or so to find stuff but it seems fine. I'll have to see what junk it has installed but that can wait.

  2. Looking good Adrian...you've got your life laid out in front of you and, you know, instantly you turn the computer on, what the weather is doing in London.
When you talk to Cortina do you have to wait for that winning starter motor to fire up before you get an answer...must be a real pain on a cold and frosty morning?
And you've got fizzy pop on demand too..can't be bad!
    Have fun!...[;o)

    1. Trevor, I've just checked and it's called Cortana. Cortinas were a bit naff but that single rail gearbox was a beauty. I built quite a few with straight cut gears and without the syncro cones.
I've switched the weather to Perth. I don't know what the pop is about I'll give it a click. It seems to be some sort of game. I'll get rid of it. it does have annoying music for a start.

    1. Cloudia, I was psyched up for a real battle. Last time I loaded and OS it was a real struggle. This literally did it all on it's own. No problems so far. I did have a bit of screen flicker but after a restart it seems to be stable now.

  4. Marie, there doesn't seem to be too much different. I couldn't get the tool bar thing at the bottom of my second monitor to disappear but have sorted that now.

  6. I go between 7 and 10 seemlessly. The differences are minor once you have your normal desktop. They will try to throw a thing or two at you, but once you say no thanks, it's all fine.

    1. Bill, it was painless and so far it still is.

    1. John. it seems fine. I still can't believe that I wasn't messing about for hours.

  8. I know I took a deep breath and braced myself for angst ridden hours before hitting the update button. It was surprisingly easy, technology must be making progress. Not all change is bad.

    1. Yes Pauline, after years of putting up with. having to reload, copy and move stuff this did it all by itself.

  9. In December I went from XP on an old computer to Windows 10 on a brand new one. I never ever used Windows 7 or Vista. I am still operating in a fog. I don't know how to get my old files from the old machine to the new machine, or how to acces new files on the new one. Perhaps I will become a troglodyte.

    1. Bob, I'll see if I can help but it is a problem unless the machine is available. I can't remember what either XP or Vista were like but do know they weren't much use.
I would get a memory stick and stick it in the old machine and copy things onto it, then plug it into the Windows 10 machine and see if it can sort the files. Some it will others may no longer be supported and it won't copy software. If you have anything important then get an IT person in to do it and show you how to do it. I don't think that XP supported drag and drop I seem to recall you had to right click the file or Shift right click multiple files then either copy or move them to the memory stick which will be called Drive something like 'G' or 'K'.

  10. I've still managed to avoid Win10 so far. The one thing I really don't like about it is how much tracking details it collects and sends back to Microsoft (including websites you visit etc.). There are ways to turn this off but they have been caught turning it all back on in security updates which is rather naughty.

    1. Mark, I did think about installing Linux or similar but decided it was beyond me.
They are welcome to track my boring browsing.
I am just amazed how easily it went. I can't say it seems much faster, it starts quicker but then I had a bit of a clean up prior to installing it.
There seem several things that I won't use but better that than stuff I want that isn't there.
I'll no doubt post if the system starts messing me about.

  11. Congratulations on managing to skip the worry and yet ending up with a successful installation :) I did it the worrying back in the autumn (i.e. I think I did press a button somewhere, agreeing to start the process). But on the whole have had no major problems with it. I do have a growing feeling though that nowadays I'm being controlled by the computer rather than the other way round. (I just wish that at least it would send me some reassuring messages about what it's up to, when it's obviously working on something, but not the things that I was planning to do...)

    1. Monica, I wonder what it is doing. Mine seems fine so far but I will check activity logs if I can remember how or find out how on the internet. One thing I did notice before upgrading and whilst I was having a spring clean were about 6GB of redundant Windows files. Also my Temp file folder shows nothing but has got about 16GB in it if I expand the C drive. I'll become computer literate on day.

  12. Adrian, it just seems to me that one can't turn a device on these days without finding a long queue of software updates waiting to be installed, and more of than not slowing everything else down in the process, and requiring restarts and whatnot; and by the time all that is sorted out, I have often forgotten what it was I wanted to do in the first place... ;)
