ABOUT ME

I live in a camper van with a West Highland Terrier for company.
My passion is creating images but it is a work in progress.

BUTTONS. (25/01/13)

My brain hurts, I’m tired, bemused and snowed in.

Yesterday I drove down from Moffat to Castleton in Derbyshire. I called at Harrison Cameras. I came out of the shop with things with lots of buttons……Expensive buttons.

_V0G4344_edited-1  The view from the van this morning, more snow is on it’s way.

_V0G4335_6_7_tonemapped_edited-1  This happened by accident…….it’s a snowy mess.

_V0G4363_edited-1 This is the MP-E 65mm macro lens all set up and ready to go.

_V0G4361_edited-1 Brain baffling buttons. I have included a selection of images produced by this lens. It is a challenge, amazingly it can be hand held. I have included all the shots I took. None are cropped and non went in the bin.

IMG_0001_edited-1  My mobile phone……(Hand held).

IMG_0003_edited-2    The end of my pencil…..(tripod).

IMG_0004_edited-1   A prickle on a holly leaf. (Tripod).

IMG_0005_edited-1   Another bit of Holly leaf……(hand held) and replete with ice and bird muck.

IMG_0006_edited-1  This is not as sharp as it should be.. it’s a bit of my thumb.

This is a lens with some exciting possibilities. DOF is minimal and focussing is a challenge. Focus stacking will solve many of the problems. I used an angle finder to focus. I’ll try live view later. So many things to try.

Have a great weekend.

  1. Wow! Adrian, looks like there's lots of fun to be had with that new lens, it looks the business!
You're definitely giving the old grey matter a work out just lately!

Not sure about the second shot(s)...it made me go all queasy!

    Take care in that snow...[;o)

  2. I've been reading up on this lens, and I want one.
Like having a microscope. These first goes with it are impressive.
I'm sure you'll get some cracking pictures with it once some decent weather arrives and brings some insects to pose.
    Take care in that snow.

    1. It is a belter....It will be wending it's way south on Monday. Have a click with it then see what you think.
It is giving it turning to rain tomorrow.

    2. PS. Keith the maximum magnification I used was 3x. It goes to five but I can't see to focus. The flash illumination wasn't bright enough. It will be a difficult learning curve. I'm still happy with it. Composition is a real problem as with any macro...this is well on the way to micro. I look forward to your input.

  3. Trevor, I was going to do some more like the second one.
I'm amazed with this lens. Insects will be a real challenge. It is not easy to use but I'll get there one day.

    1. It's over mine as well. Like flying a Jumbo Jet it is and almost as heavy.

  5. Methinks you're making life complicated for yourself. Good luck with that! The multi-van-photo reminds me of the time once-upon-a-holiday in the past when my dad went into a dark closet in a hotel room to change film in the camera. Back home when developing the films one came out blank and the other with a lot of unexpected combinations...

    1. Monica, my heart loves complicated...my brain struggles. I wish i were blessed with twice the grey cells. I spent ages working out what happened. Your dads problem was a frame wind on one. This was me half asleep banging disparate images into Photomatix. I kept having to get up through the night to learn the flash unit.

    1. Bob, the lens does what it says on the tin. Adrian is a bit of a muppet. It is a lens that requires four hands. I need a Girl Friday. There are some good images from it on the internet. I love the simplicity of landscape photography. I'm amazed that Canon produced this lens. It is reet good. I hope I can do it justice. A fly's eye is possible but possibly not by me.

    1. It is an awkward lens to use. I am worried about drivingthe lens into the subject.

  10. DOF is always the problem the closer you get but you will beat it into submission. Ring flash as well!

    1. John, it is challenging. at f16, i win DOF but can't see to focus.
I have been trying live view focussing the stopping down. The ring light should be sold as part of the kit. It has focussing lights but they turn off quickly. There is no way of leaving them on so I'll just have to work faster.
