NO MORE RED EYE. (21/09/13)

Red eye has never been a problem I’ve had even with camera mounted strobes and rarely after a heavy night.

I never take pictures of people unless they are half pissed in a pub or a member of a band. The latter are usually more spaced out than the clientele what is watching them. Why oh why did I spend thirty pounds on this magnificent white elephant.

_MG_1685 It took my fancy and for the price of three days smoking seemed a bargain. Flash is an image saver used either at 1/8th power or since I swapped from Olympus to Canon then TTL is for the most part fine. I already had the wriggly wire and the strobe. A strobe is much the same as a flash but you avoid burning your fingers swapping bulbs…Why folk moan and bang on about recycle times is a bit beyond me. This edifice was built for proper flash units. It puts the flash far enough away from the lens to avoid the ‘Red Eye’.  In my limited experience so does the same strobe mounted direct on the camera but I tend to bounce it either sideways or off the ceiling. Nothing more irritating than flash unless it is flash aimed at one.

_MG_1683            It has a lovely grip. and a slot for my thumb.  Worth the money on it’s own. I’m sorry about the state of my fingers. I have just been unloading a couple of really naughty Tups. For those that don’t know they are men sheeps. Daft as a brush they are and very greasy. I can’t believe they didn’t want to get out of the trailer….I bet they were as daft getting in. I should have washed my hands though…No excuse at all. I am a mucky devil.  Mucky but helpful. The farmers wife had left him at the pub to chat about sheep and she was dressed up so smart that I felt duty bound to help. It was only after dragging a couple of filthy sheep I thought to ask her what happened to all this  female emancipation?

Julie said: “Nowt as ‘appened to it. Yuse do as yuse is asked.”

Fair enough but I did wonder. At least she asked and didn’t tell. As a kid I was told. We males are making ground but I don’t anticipate equality in my lifetime.

I love being back in Derbyshire. I love the people here. I never got to handle sheep in Scotland, thank god. Civilised up in Scotland they are.

I’m sorry about yesterdays images I’ve done them again. I’ve popped them side by side. One click will fire them up full screen.

The left hand one a is what I intended.

_MG_1666This one is new,  same view but a dew pond for a foreground.

_MG_1669  The trees are starting to just get a tint.

If anyone knows a better way then please let me know. I straddles the Tup, picks one front leg up and holds it tight round his head and shuffles the bucking sheep on it’s back legs. Horrendous it is, damn hard work. No wonder Pilates is so popular as a serious work out. Try daft sheep wrestling. That lanolin will soften the skin.

Have fun.

  1. If it wasn't for the carpark in the last image I would be tempted to hang around for a peregrine. I liked the addition of the dew pond in the foreground, however it might just be me but I like the image on the right, not sure why to be fair.
As for the sheep stand behind them with a large knife and a jar of mint sauce...works for me.

  2. There used to be raptors nesting in these old quarry faces. This government are more concerned about the Grouse. Before you vote ask them if they shoot. Since Dithery got in keepers will shoot protected birds without fear of prosecution.
    Bring on the revolution.

These were purchased at a Ram Sale. A good Tup costs anything from a thousand pounds up into the tens of thousands. We have to quieten the wee buggers by grabbing a front leg...The way they act up a swift kick in the bollocks is an awful tempting solution. If I did I can't see myself coming out smelling like roses. They aren't that bad they just hops about a bit.

    2. Douglas, I'll apply for the job. I'll have to learn to speak properly first though. I can imagine myself in number Ten. Using my size tens to good effect.

  3. You're just a multi-talented guy. You can deal with any aspect of photography and when it comes to sheep you can toss them around with abandon. The hell with dirty hands the job has got to be done.

    1. Red, my first weekend job at thirteen was sheep handling. It was hard work then and is hard work now. Thank heaven he only purchased two.

  4. Hilarious ~ not sure what I will pick on to comment?? ~ certainly the flash became the side story in your post. So I will just say the new image with the pond in the foreground Is a good one. You will have to train the pups to herd sheep.

    1. Carol, they love to join in but lose interest after ten minutes. the resident sheep dogs can also get a bit iffy when assisted by two terriers.

  5. Adrian this is your funniest blog to date that I've read. Sheep wrestling is funny. Probably a good idea to not get overly excited with the lanolin.

It is good you have a new toy. We guys get bored with our old toys and want new ones to play with.

I can see now why you said the old picture was not good. The color is much better on the new one. The picture with the pond in the foreground is awesome.

    1. David, I've decided to burn my bra. It's about time we men stood up and were counted.
I can't resist a bargain. It will come in handy for something.
It isn't really sheep wrestling, they are used to being handled and small ones are best lifted up. These are far too heavy.

  6. These are lovely landscapes! I love the color saturation here.

    1. Maria, I'm still chopping and changing my workflow. Olympus would always benefit from a good sharpen. The Canon is generally better with very little for landscape. For macro I tend to push unsharp mask until it halos then drop back a good bit. Everything gets a detail boost in RAW and then in PS i use curves or levels then vibrance way up and saturation down a bit.

    2. PS. colour temperature is generally good at about 6000k.

  7. My immediate reaction was that I preferred the original on the right but after a bit of humming and hawing I come to the conclusion that I'm perhaps more inclined towards the new one on the left. But then again.....

I do very much like the one with the dew pond.

As for equality..when you find it let me know...please.

    1. Graham, I've come to the conclusion that equality isn't going to happen for me. I try to be strict but a flutter of the eye lashes or a swing of the hips has me doing as I'm told.

  8. Are you sure you were "wrestling" the sheep? I suppose a nice thing about having a sheep as a "partner" is that there's no need for small talk afterwards but personally I'll stick with ewes. When I first saw your hand - without reading the explanation - I though you'd been to a tanning studio where the session had clearly gone badly wrong.

    1. YP. I'm getting far too old for sheep handling. I'm glad he only bought two.
