DRAB. (15/02/14)

It’s not too bad this afternoon but it is not photography weather. We have been out three times today and got wet three times. I think it’s called a full house and I know it’s called a blasted nuisance.

I was going into Aviemore to take some steam train pictures this morning but they are running a DMU. For those that don’t have an anorak with a furry hood DMU stands for Railcar. It actually stands for Diesel Multiple Unit…….Thought you’d want to know that.

I’ve been playing again and I may have to play again as these files are quite large. It has taken me awhile to puzzle out how to create GIF files in CS6.

This is my poor interpretation of this morning walk. I did try to do it in Blender 3D where I have much more control over the physics. I admit I got totally confused. So ended up using the video timeline in CS6. I apologise for the skipping it’s where the loop starts and stops. I did try a five frame fade in and out but that looked worse. Any ideas would be appreciated. It was snowing but not this hard. The snow is Photoshop.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

    1. Peter, there must be an App to do it. If you use Photoshop and want to know then i can send you an e-mail. Blender does a better job but it could be a two day job in Blender.
There must be dozens of tutorials on the internet. Most assume you know what you are doing. The important thing is to keep the file size small so resize the start image to something between 400 and 800 pixels on the longest side. Then keep the number of frames as low as you can. This is only about thirty frames or just over a second. I'll work at it some more.

  2. That's a brainstopper, CS6 must be ok Adrian.

    1. Bob, you can do this in CS3 as long as you have the extended version. I only ever had Elements and Elements Premier which is Elements speak for video capability. I got CS6 as it was my last chance to buy it before it went rent by the month on Creative Cloud. I've a sneaking feeling they are cutting out some features. If so then Adobe can go hand wallow in a cesspit of their own making.

    1. No worries Douglas. There are so many things to play with that unless you are using all the features in a bit of the programme then it's all too easy to forget the work flow.

  4. Have not used this feature in CS6 but will check it out during the week.
We are making promotional posters, stickers and tattoos for the schools Battle of the Bands competition. No snow in Cairns.

    1. Carol, I got fed up but now I know the workflow I could introduce another two layers with smaller and smaller snow falling. Should have done it really but got fed up.

    2. PS. I suspect if I used Render>Clouds and made a displacement map or two then i would get some swirling as well. I'll have to write it on a piece of paper then follow it through. I ought to have done a better job but my heart wasn't in it today.

    3. I was going to suggest layers to create depth, and perhaps different length loops to create a random effect. P.S. Slow the loop down. But I am guessing you can only have one loop.

      Delete
    4. Carol it does need another layer with smaller snow falling more slowly. I can only have one finished loop but I can have as many tracks both video and audio as I like. I can also have several video groups. These would then have to be rendered. and a small section converted back to a frame animation and saved as a GIF.
In Blender 3D the work flow is completely different. I would have to UV modify the image. Preferably several images with different DOF. Then create an emmitter plane. I would also need to place a barrier into a mesh of some sort to collect my falling snow.
I'll look into it on the next horrid day.

  5. Looking out from my own windows today has been like that too (snow mixed with rain). As I have no dogs, I decided to just stay in!

    1. YP, not clever enough by half.
I have had snow particles going up in Blender 3D. I ended up giving them negative mass. It's a very powerful bit of software. Better still it's free.
This was created by using a random pattern over the image popping it into a time line keyframe the first pattern move on fifty frames pull the pattern down keyframe again and the job should be perfect.
I introduced a bit of customary Muppetry along the way.

    3. YP, It is English. I don't understand grammar you are not a mathematician. Neither am I or not a good one, I love posh software. I appreciate the amount of work that goes into it.
Apps are for you and you are sensible I'm playing catchup and reinventing the wheel. It was only about ten years ago I used to move icons about and be amazed that they worked. 3D mathematics isn't hard and 4D is over a hundred years old.
Aspherical triangle has the sum of it's included angles from zero to three hundred and sixty. A plane triangle can only have included angles up to one hundred and eighty. There's a start in your education. Bugger semi colons. They sound like a disease to me. If I ever get my head round the fourth dimension I'll let you know.

  7. As I mentioned in a previous comment, my mother and I took pictures of our daughter in the recent snow, and I feel that even though she would never consider herself even an amateur photographer, she faced the same problem you have: how to capture the beauty of falling snow in a photograph. Of course, there is video, but I like what you have done here: it has the effect almost of a snowglobe; not one of those cheap plastic things you pick up at an airport gift shop, but one handcrafted by an artist.

I have never even attempted to work with Photoshop or Blender, so I admit I am out of my depth here. But I admire how you are unsatisfied with your own work, even when it is stunning. I wish everyone with your talents had the same determination!

    1. Nathaniel, your mother and you have a daughter?

Ask her to try using flash to freeze the snow. It works quite well.

Digital art and manipulation is a young mens game. I end up with sheets of notes while I try and work out how to achieve what I envisage. Today wasn't that organised I was doing the crossword as well and the newspaper is covered in indecipherable scribble.

    2. Adrian, sometimes I get tangled up in my own attempts at being articulate, and I'm glad you caught my mistake! I'm so used to referring to my daughter as "our" daughter, because my fiancee is quick to take offense if I use the wrong pronoun. I think a lot of new parents go through a possessive phase - my fiancee still has a bit of jealousy that our daughter said "dada" before "mama."

Currently, my fiancee, daughter, and I live in a town an hour's drive from the town where my mother lives, and while my daughter and I were visiting my mother, we were hit with a snowstorm that made the roads impassable for several days. Fortunately, the town where my fiancee, daughter, and I live was not hit very badly, so my fiancee made it through the storm with no problems aside from missing our presence.

Okay, I think I greatly overexplained myself - I have a horrible tendency to do that! I will pass along your advice about the flash, although to be honest, I hope that we are done with snow this winter. It is beautiful, but we in Alabama are so terrified of it, the first snowflake tends to send everyone into an absolute panic!

    3. Nathaniel, I am very tolerant of other cultures. I did suspect you didn't have an Oedipus complex. I've never been to Alabama but was prepared to accept your comment. I used to have a follower who was a Mormon. She believed in a snake healer called Smith.
Your country is full of wondrous beliefs and practices.
      Glad you have clarified matters.
Yes you have. In the words of the Bard.
The man, he protesteth too much, perchance there is truth lying within the foul accusation.
      Have fun.

  9. Keep playing! It is very impressive at first glance. I wish I could help with Blender but you have been the rabbit and I the hare. Only today I finally figured out how to break my house up into multiple layers.

I think black and white was a good idea.

    1. David, this is 2D video. I have been trying to use the Nodes editor in Blender but can't get my head around it.
Name those layers. Name them something meaningful or life can get very confusing.
The image is colour, there just wasn't any or very little.

    1. Maria, CS6 has a different Timeline than previous versions. It nolonger has the animate command.
Premier Elements 10 is easier but nothing like as flexible. I'm sure there will be a one click App to add snow but I enjoy playing.
I did look at Iceflow tutorials and also Adobe's nothing relevant did I find.
There are some awful tutorials on the internet.

    2. I don't know what you mean by animate command. I was able to make a GIF with CS6 but I still have not done a shoot in continuous burst mode that is worth using for a decent GIF.

    3. If you look in the middle of the Timline there is a box where you can toggle between Animate Frames and Video.

    4. So what do you do, mix two scenes together? Which sort of images you use for "animate" frames?

  17. Effective image that made me smile unlike the reference to DMU, the "Costcutter" of railways.

I remember a time when they in the process of modernising this particular mode of transport and the availability was so poor that they had to replace some country services with the more expensive loco hauled as they were too rash in introducing sterile boxes on wheels... happy days. Much later those looking after the workings of the Carlisle Settle railway decided that it would be a good idea to try this again. Ok it cost them a £1 million contract for the year but it filled the train up. Bringing me back to this post, the day I sampled it the weather was like this and there was a risk the train would be terminated near Dent as a lorry hit the underside of a railway bridge and had to wait a while as the snow got deeper for the inspectors to come out and assess it.
