WONDERFUL. (04/02/14)

It is my last day here for a week or so. I couldn’t have wished for a better afternoon. The wind has gone and the sun is shining. _MG_2901  The lower lifts are working but not the upper ones or the funicular. This will enlarge with a click.

_V0G7952

_V0G7955

_V0G7959 We had a stroll down the north side of Loch Morlich. It was a really good couple of hours.

Tomorrow I head south, I’ll see what the weather is like and either do Teesside in one go or split the journey.

    1. Maria, it hasn't stopped snowing for weeks. It is only a couple of miles away up the hill. It's still very windy up there so the higher lifts aren't running. The snow is also very unstable on the head wall so avalanches would be guaranteed if they let skiiers up there.

    1. Gary, I'm only away for ten days then I'm coming back till Easter. I could settle here. I just wish I wasn't such a wimp and could get up higher. There are lots of wild animals about but I have a choice between them and the dogs. They were sitting still today with Mallard all round them but Squirrels are just too tempting as are Deer. They have yet to see a Pine Marten but I suspect it would have novelty value as well.

  4. All the time I look at your pictures and think how good they are. Often I see ones I love. Occasionally I see one I think is spectacular. All of these are spectacular. I want to say I like number one best but I can't. It is just the most flashy. Sorry I couldn't think of a better word. The others are peaceful and they appeal to me just as much.

    1. David, I know many snappers better than I am. We only walk about three or four miles. We sit for ages waiting for the clouds in photo two to complement the tree line and be reflected. It's a good one. The first is a telephoto shot from about the same place. Most of what you see is cloud but it was still blowing 40mph up there. The gusts on the summit were 80mph at ten this morning.
I only allow myself twenty frames. I want to show a place at it's best.

  5. Oh Adrian, I have never had a desire to see snow in real life ~ i hate the cold ~ but that first image is just beautiful. The size of that mountain, the amount of snow it took to cover it, just makes leaves me in awe. Might need to get that one printed for my cubicle at work.

    1. Carol, it is wonderful stuff. I set off most days with three layers on and am hot after a few minutes plodding through it. The camera batteries take a hammering though.
I can supply free at much higher res. This should print and feel free, all my images I post are free.

  6. You want to see a Pine Martin? Boil a couple of eggs and put out a couple of jam sandwiches. Yes, really. They absolutely love both. We used to visit a friend who had them visit on a regular basis. They could smell jam sandwiches and boiled eggs at about half a mile! Honest. I am not kidding you.

I just loved your snowy pictures. How can you bear to leave - February through mid March is the best time for snow.

    1. Spesh,
I'm going back to Altnarhara, I saw one regularly there. I used to leave it a fresh egg and a peanut butter sandwich. The gulls and crows used to beat the Pine marten to the feast. What the hell....It's only a big Ferret. What sort of jam? I hope they can get by on Morrison basics jam.
I used to stop where I am before it was a campsite. If the snow was bad we used to walk to Tomnitoul. It only takes a couple of days. I wish I could do it now.
I'm back drecktly as our SW folk say.
I have found glass on the beach but it is well rounded off. Molotov Cocktails were what caused it. If i could afford the petrol I'd have a go myself. The glass round the recycle bin is a far greater hazard.

    2. Much prettier than ferrets though. Strawberry Conserve - only the very best!
Look forward to seeing your pictures of them............

    3. Spesh. I was being a cheapskate. I'll buy some conserve and a jar of that honey that costs seven pounds for a little jar. You sound like the sort of lass who could advise on such esoteric matters.
I like a king prawn omelette; as do the dogs. I tell them to go away in old Angly Saxon. I'll talk to the posh ferret just the same.
They are beautiful and do deserve a Languistine or whatever the French is for a posh Prawn. They deserve the shell.

    1. Mersad, thank you. They are okay.
Perfection has yet to arrive. I just love trying. To me yesterdays picture is in the past. Apart from the tele shot of the mountain these were shot with the Canon TS-E 24. It's a wonderful manual lens. Had Canon thought to put a leaf shutter in it it would be perfect....Silly me there is no such thing as perfect.

  10. I love that snow shot, beautiful, but I hate the cold. My pick would be the first of the water shots with the calm, calm water, reflections and footsteps along the shore. Safe travels.

    1. YP, I should have taken a longer lens. I rarely use telephotos for landscapes. I'll have to try it more often.

  13. The difference in elevation certainly makes for different photos. You have super photos of the ski area. It's unbelievable that nearby you have the pleasant lakes.

    1. Red, it is very mild for here. I suspect that in a normal year the loch would be frozen.

  15. Great imahes but I like the first the most, I really enjoyed the the low clouds hitting the slopes or is it snow being blon around? But as with most of your images it bring back some great memories for example on the first image the ski lift on the right as it reaches the top (2nd to last pylon) there was a massive mound that if you didn't let go would either spit you out onto the hard ice and you bash your chin as I did or as my mum did almost end up going around the last pylon and back down the mountain...great times.

    1. Douglas, it is cloud. The snow is blowing but not that much.
I too have enjoyed the ice and rain which characterises Scottish skiing.
The snow is perfect at the moment though.
