THE TREE. (11/12/15)

The internet is still very hit and miss and the weather is miserable.
I have spent several hours making a Christmas tree for the card scene. It is not easy and the way I did it it really gave the computer a hammering, I was having crashes every ten minutes. I used curves then converted them to a mesh. I did try and add leaves in the sapling generator but there was no way it would have it…………far too much to handle. I eventually put the needles on the tree branches but not the trunk using hair particles. It’s not brilliant but  as it’s 3D I can rotate it, scale it squash or extend it and get lots of different trees or the same tree looking different.

I am happy to have got a result at all. I just wish I had written down what I settled on. If I do another then I’ll have to start guessing all over again. It will enlarge with a click but then it doesn’t look too good.

It passes wet and cold days on. Have a good weekend.

  2. It looks good so the work was worth it, you think?

    1. It's recognisable Marie. I like playing with 3D, it's amazing how powerful the software is.

  3. Looking good Adrian, you've put lots of hard work into it...at least it's keeping you occupied and off the streets.
You'd better get on with it though...according to the weather guessers it looks like you're in for a couple of cold nights..... you might have to throw it on the fire to keep you warm!
    Enjoy your weekend...[;o)

  4. I do really like your star atop. Nicely created, and it keeps oneself busy.

    1. Lynda, I keep having a go at 3D modelling but I doubt I'll ever get the job sorted.

  5. Very nice tree! Great work, especially between computer crashes.

    1. Linda, I can see a more powerful machine being required.

  6. I think it's lovely. Minimal, tasteful, and very ingenious. I'm not a fan of tinsel and glitter.

    1. Frances, I notice that I have a few floating needles but I can't think how to erase them.

  7. I can't do stuff like this. I tried to learn Flash once, but gave it up as a lost cause. So, good for you.

    1. John, Flash is a bit different and not as flexible. Blender is free but hard to get used to.

  8. Similar weather in Sheffield today. I haven't even been out of the house so I am glad I got a long walk in yesterday. The forecast looks miserable too.

    1. YP, Great here today but how long it will last is anyone's guess.

  9. Very impressive, Adrian, but I can't help thinking that it would be easier to photograph a tree, replace the background with plain blue, and stick a star on top - the one that you'd already spent hours constructing would do! ;-}

Just in case this is my last visit before Christmas, I'll take this opportunity to wish you and the dogs a very merry Christmas and an excellent New Year!

    1. Richard, that is the star I used. The problem with using a 2D image in animations is that they are not 3D so just look flat if the view changes. This tree I can view from any angle.
You have a good Christmas too.

  10. Well we've had a very good couple of days with sun and little wind which is pretty rare at the moment in the Hebrides (of course we also had some heavy showers to keep us on our toes) so playing around on the computer has been the last thing on my mind.

  12. Oh dear. Seems more complicated than decorating a real tree - having to put the needles on as well! One by one? :)

  13. Monica, it does take an hour or so but I put lots of needles on then reduce them.
