AT BAY. (02/ 06/16)

The weather is unbelievably good up north. The Brexit people have drawn ahead in the polls and even some Poles are joining us. Camoron is a lying useless piece of pig poking toast or one step nearer. All is well with the world. My world and selective bits of it. The downside is that I hoyked my body miles and miles this afternoon to find Dragonflies or Great Crested Newts I found a dead frog being eaten by a naughty Rook and a comatose Saint Mark’s fly on a Reed._MG_5518

It’s been a busy day, this morning we went to fetch an excavator and it involved reversing up a mile of track, roasting track, dusty track it was. Then we had to grease up another machine and swap a rock pecker for a bucket.

All go but I got an ice cream at the shop on the way back. It’s years since I’ve had an ice cream, I got a Ninety Niner as it was the only name I recognised. By Gum it was posh it came already made with a clear plastic lid and a cardboard wrapper on it. I was struggling to work out how to access it but the lass in the shop sorted it for me. It was okay, The lass in the shop was perfect one of the rare Scots with yards and pounds of curly red hair on her head, freckles on her nose and cheeks, gorgeous. The ice cream was cold but the flake was a bit stingy I thought. My mate had a Magnum but it was a bit complex for me; like an ice cream on a stick..Glad I didn’t risk one of those as it would have run all over my fingers and as they were covered in digger crap I wouldn’t have fancied licking them.

Tea time arrived and with it. A fox at bay.

I know I ought to shout Tally Ho or after the bastard but I like them. They are wee devils if you don’t shut the hens up but when it has shed the last of it’s winter coat it will look a real bobby dazzler. It’s looking for rabbits.

Buck at Bay, cheeky little blighter eating barley. Not Landseer but still quite cute. I don’t know why but I took loads of pictures of him and I see them everyday. The fox is a less frequent sighting so I’ll show another of it.

I think it knows I’m here. I just wish it would catch more rabbits.

Have fun.

  1. You get the sense of how the fly is latched onto the reed. Great photo.

Is there a hunting season when you can catch rabbits in snares. Some competition for the foxes. Love rabbit stew!

    1. Marie, you can catch them when you like but most folk prefer them when they aren't lactating.

  3. How fun to shoot a fox. I have only ever seen one in the wild, and it was a rather mangy specimen.

    1. John, they are often a bit scruffy. This one isn't too bad.

  4. Excellent fox photos, but I have to disagree with you on the EU. Brexit would be a disaster, and if you think Cameron is bad (and on that I agree with you), just imagine how much worse the country would be if run by Johnson, Gove, and Duncan-Smith......

Anyway back to a nicer topic, I haven't seen a fox in years (3AM neat Manchester Airport was the last time) but I did once see one fish which was spectacular.

    1. Mark I don't think you need worry about Brexit. As Stalin said it's not about who votes but about who counts the votes. I think this is the problem people are not voting for competent politicians but for the lesser evil.

    2. A "competent politician" I'm not sure they still exist. I think they went extinct along with the dinosaurs!

  5. A couple of grand sightings and a nice little fly. About a year since I last saw a fox in the village. I think we changed places for weather. Several drizzly overcast days here with a biting wind.

  6. Nice to see the fox out hunting in the sunshine...it must have a den full of hungry cubs to feed?

Lovely macro of the male Bibio marci...[;o)

    1. Trevor, yes that's what I thought but this one does wander about in the daylight.

  7. No foxes on Lewis but I did see a rabbit in a car park in the town the other day...very odd.

    1. Graham, I thought foxes were everywhere. What do the upper classes on Lewis chase?

  8. Super macro shot of the fly, Adrian. Your 'large mammal' images are delightful too. I've got three urban foxes which visit my garden on a regular basis. I've never seen one of them out in daylight, but I do know, from footage on my camera traps that occasionally they've been lurking there when I've been out after dark. Mrs P. won't go out in the garden after dark now in case one gets her by the throat.

    Best wishes - - - Richard

    1. Richard, I enjoy seeing them. I don't think the risk of fox attack is high.

  9. I haven't seen a fox in the wild since I was a child, there aren't any in NZ. Back then I could never say out loud that I thought foxes looked cute, or the adults would get all uppity because they killed their chickens and my grandad would be out with the gun hunting them down.

    1. Pauline, they are a nuisance. Then hens have to be shut up at night or the little tinker would have them.
