IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF (30/10/10)

We have moved , not far, to an area that inspired John Sell Cotman, Turner, Walter Scott, Dickens, Puff Daddy and Johnny Rotten. Okay you spoil sports, forget the last two.

We went out for a stroll, almost a walk at three miles to get inspiration from some real artists. I didn’t though we did have a good walk………..dogs seemed to enjoy it. Loads of pheasant to annoy and sadly one to despatch as it had been shot and couldn’t fly. We met a couple of game keepers and I had a word. They do their best to clear up after a shoot but even the dogs can miss the odd flying wounded.

I really can’t make my mind up over hunting shooting and fishing, I tend to think the good outweighs the bad but I really don’t like the corporate days out that these shoots depend on. They do however provide a vast income which by and large is ploughed back into the rural environment. Do away with that and start charging ramblers………it is not going to happen! Irresponsible walkers and their canine companions do as much damage as the shoots and put sod all back other than litter. I know my dogs run amok but only through autumn and winter. During nesting time they are on a lead. Or under control, with Terriers the lead is the only option.

Enough. Bet you want to know where we are. I’m sitting on a fence!

imageGreta Bridge by John Sell Cotman………Bet you thought I painted it………………NO!…………..

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   Greta Bridge by Adrian………….My balustrades are better than his. It is a wonderful bridge but I can’t get at it. It’s a wellies and waders job, touching the forelock job.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA     Balustrades still okay and the bridge over the river Greta leads to this…………….

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   The pub where Charles Dickens wrote Nicholas Nickleby. I thought he was just a superb novelist………..damned handy with a brush and candy pink paint……a man of many talents.

On we wander to the Meeting of the Waters………..

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWhere the Greta meets the Tees. A spectacular place but you will have to take my word for it or be patient. I fully intend coming back wet suited and wellied and getting down and dirty here, in my case, down and clean. It is a stunning bit of river or stunning bit of two rivers.

I’ll leave you to enjoy your weekend with the only good shot of the day and it is a hop skip and a jump from my front window.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA    I tell fibs as well………..The inspiration that all the notables drew on, their muse even, was the A66………….

That’s all.

  1. I am enjoying your photos. For us here in the Appalachian Mountains, hunting season means that I stay out of the woods which encircle my home.

  4. I'd love to be sitting by that stream right now. The sound of water rushing over rocks is always so soothing. I'll try to hold the scene in my head as I play 'beauty parlour' with my grand-daughters. I feel a bit like those rumbling trucks right now.

  5. I think your reflection shot is magical here. A workmate is always trying to inspire me with a meal or drink at the Morritt arms possibly after organising a walk along the Tees. Ahh, the lovely A66 !!

  6. Inspiring autumn colours and I of course especially love that reflection picture (having a weakness for that sort of thing...)

  7. Beyond the garden, glad you enjoy your visits. We here tails here that the woods and hunting are not a healthy mix.

John, Nice to get one image out of a day. Don't know what the dickens Dickens was thinking. Maybe he was colour blind.

Bob, one half good anyway. Thanks.

Trevor, I do just don't believe all you read.

Pauline, the A66 trunk road unfortunately drowns out the sound of rushing water. It is for all that I very pleasant place. You should have done the Halloween photos after the beauty Parlour game.

j_on_tour, Thanks we are off to investigate the Morritt Arms at lunch time. I'll do a food review if it's any good.

Dawntreader, So do I. It took longer than it should have as I wanted the storm clouds behind the trees but waiting for the sun to show was a good twenty minute job. Pleasant enough place to wait though.

  8. Hi Adrian: Another lovely set of pictures. The sunshine has certainly lifted the autumn colours this week: I know I've much enjoyed my short trips out and about. Love the Cotman picture.

  12. That last shot is really beautiful. I have mixed feelings about hunting as well but I figure if I'm going to get upset about it I better give up beef. Hasn't happened yet. Here, too, hunting brings money to the local economy and keeps large tracts of land undeveloped that might otherwise have turned into subdivisions.

  13. Jolynne, thanks, the hunting here is different, it does alter the landscape as the shoots are managed with birds being bred for the shoot, cover being planted, heathers being burnt. Not bad necessarily but different certainly.

  14. Hey there! I was expecting that you would be magnifying where you are after the second photo.

That painting by Cotman is beautiful. I think having it around my condo would be a nice addition!

So nice to see the pub where Dickens wrote a book.

I love the last photo, so breathtakingly beautiful. Probably more beautiful than on personal!
