A PLAGUE OF SPARROWS (06/08/11)

A depressing sort of day, damp and drizzly this morning and nothing about but a Shield Beetle which I dislodged and couldn’t find. I was going down to the river but as it’s a five or six mile round trip and it was barely light I gave it a miss.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA     This is a picture showing about a tenth of the flock of Sparrows. They can eat two fat balls a day and empty the seed feeder faster than I can fill it. They were getting scarce but seem to have made a recovery round here. I am limiting them to one fill up a day. The only other visitors are a Great Tit, a Blue Tit and a family of these………………

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA     Baby Gold Finch…………I hope! I can count the number of Robins I’ve seen this summer on the fingers of one hand………..anyone else noticed a scarcity?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA     The view from the van…. latish yesterday.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA      A bit of old barn………….the best bit.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA      The summer is moving on fast so I thought I’d show you a small area of the grass verge on the old drovers way. The purple is Tufted Vetch, the blue Harebells and the yellow is Ladies Bedstraw………..I hope! The green is either leaves or grass and grass comes in hundreds of forms………….I’ll give grass ID a miss till next week. Like tomorrow next week never arrives.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAn unusual choice of tow vehicle………….there are at least two nutters on this site.

I hope for a better day tomorrow. Have a good Sunday.

  1. Spot on with the ID's Adrian, and good to see so many sparrows, considering they're in decline, (we're told).
It looks a nice spot you've found to stay.

  2. Keith, there seem to be two flocks here........one comes and then they fly off as a similar number arrive..............fifty three in the first flock and forty two in the second. We orthodontists can count birds! It's okay here but a long walk for a change of scene.

  4. Grace, we are separated by a common language. Nutters are mentally abnormal.
I do take the odd normal image.
Keith is a millionaire he has a house, I have the van. Oh! A tent and a ton of bird food. Almost forgot my wealth. forget the tent my son called round and stole it.

  5. The Sparrows are all very pretty sight, and with all those natural flowers, they are superb. Well, the nutters........

  6. Your mention of Robins made me realise it is months since I saw one visit the garden. Haven't heard any lately either.

Ah, sigh, a car that looks like a car - such a rarity these days.

  7. My House Sparrows have had a great year so fingers crossed they are on the increase everywhere.
A wonderful landscape, barn and verge.
    Nutters rule OK...

  8. Bob, they are welcome. They make a real racket when they all fly off at once.

John, There does seem to be a lot fewer Robins than usual.

Andrew, Thanks, it's good to see large flocks of Sparrow. There are plenty up in Cumbria too.

  9. You have described 'my' sparrows to a tee. I limit mine to one fill a day as well plus peanuts and bread and fat balls. It all goes.

What's a Robin. Now you come to mention it....

  10. Graham, it is years since I have seen such large flocks. Flocks of any size come to think.

  11. I don't want to be disrespectful of your grand set of images here but my stand out has to be the humorous shot of the vintage car standing next to the caravan.

  12. Jay, it does look incongruous. It is a kit car so not that old.
