ABOUT ME

I live in a camper van with a West Highland Terrier for company.
My passion is creating images but it is a work in progress.
I am always willing to share what knowledge I have and can be contacted through the comments on this post or e-mail ADRIAN

OPEN ALL HOURS. (09/09/12)

I’m tired. They were combining most of the night, grain trailers rattling past, owls calling. I was going to go and get some pictures of the combine at night but I have some neighbours for the weekend and if I leave the dogs they bark…..little buggers think I’ve simply forgotten them. They shut up if I return and curse them but that makes as much noise as they do, if not more.
There is still more wheat to get in and I caught the machine as it was being re-fuelled.

combine0909      A crops eye view…….

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThat’s it for the combine. I love it.
P9093736_37_38_39_40_tonemapped_edited-1   It’s time to reseed. This field is being prepared for the sowing of oil seed rape.
Last night I was messing with the Arduino. It’s sending me blind. I could do with a kit twice the size.
MARK set me thinking about Integrated circuits….they are cheap as chips if you’ll excuse the pun. I thought and thought. I poked wire here and there, re poked them and still no joy.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Little wonder really…..what a dogs dinner…..I need a pet spider.
I then thought to start Fritzing….thought it would clarify things in my mind…..it didn’t.
image    It takes some getting used to. I see the primary problem. One can’t dump components on top of one another. It does not support layers…..it is not Photoshop.
image     It just produces rubbish. I’ll start again, I’ll take a leaf from the spiders book and try again. Things can only get better…..I hope.
I’ve just realised that this makes me look dumber than I would like to be considered. Don’t copy any of this crap but if you too have trouble then draw consolation from the fact that you are not alone.
I've had another go at this....it works in a random sort of way.

It looks much neater.
Have a really good week.

  2. Hi Adrian, I can't see the wiring well on the photo, but assuming the photo matches the fritzing images then I think the problem is that you have three wires in the wrong place.

The three wires connected to the top right pins should all be shifted left by one pin. Currently you have 5v connected to the overflow pin (pin 9) instead of the reset pin (pin 10), and nothing is attached to the latch pin (pin 12) which means the input will never appear on the output pins.

    1. Hi Mark I've half got it working. I'll update the wiring on the post.

  3. I'll leave that just for you, Arduino causes brainstorm.

  4. Hi Adrian, you have just begun a learning curve where we all make mistakes , this is how we learn by our mistakes. Then we try and hopefully do figure out what we did wrong. If we did everything right then it would be harder to remember what we did. Since we made a mistake we start to exercise our brain, hence we burn it into our memory as to what was wrong and correct it. When I am tired and can't think right I go for a walk or watch TV to relax and then try again with a clear mind. Almost always things start to fall into place and the problem is corrected. Hope things work out for you and hope you figure it out.

    1. You are so right. Sleep on the problem and it is amazing how often i wake up with a solution.

  5. Seeding process is interesting. We do no till farming. That is, next spring we have an air seeder which makes a small rut in the ground where the seed and fertilizer go and that's it. Wait until you need the combine.

    1. The fields here are not big enough for air seeders. I believe there are some in Lincolnshire but I've never seen one.

  6. That machine is out of this world. I can only imagine the sound of combining. Hope you find those owls:)

    1. Really quiet in the air-conditioned cab with a choice of music. Some you don't have to steer they work on GPS.

  8. Superb images of the combine Adrian...it still looks clean and shiny, has the farmer been spending his hard earned money again?

I think you should separate your meal times from your play times....are you sure that you haven't mixed up your wiring diagram with your spaghetti recipe?...[;o)

  9. Yes last year....£130K plus his old one....Ouch!
These shift registers are about 60p each and allow one to control eight functions using only three pins on the processor, they are fifteen pounds.
I barely understand what they do but basically theytake data in on one pin, Latch it then pulse the latch and the data is transferred to the shift pins....it all works on binary so is efficient.....It also works with miles of wire which isn't.
PS you could link any number together at 60p each so very cost effective.
