FUNNY FACES. (14/11/14)

I don’t think it is going to get light today and the showers have given way to heavy rain. _MG_0859   The home of Rugby Sevens.

I’m hoping to go back to the abbey tomorrow but here are a few faces from yesterday.

    1. Trevor, I often wonder if the masons carved caricatures of their fellow workers or worse still the abbot.

  2. Imagine those faces 300 years ago.

May you get a glimpse of blue sky now and then this weekend. :)

  3. The weather will be kind to us here, but I won't have time to go out and take photos. I do plan to go and see Interstellar in the cinema on Saturday. Love your first moody shot. I don't mind the grey clouds (of course, having to live with them for a longer period of time, is another thing).

    1. Mersad, I am getting tired of the clouds and the rain that accompanies them but it isn't cold.

  4. That building in the first photo is very photogenic IMO.

  5. HI Adrian Those faces are quite ugly. By the way, the weather man was right. The sun has come out and we have blue skies. You see miracles can happen!!

    1. Frances, so do I. They remind me that there is somebody worse looking than myself.

  7. I'd be interested to hear whether the first gargoyle represents a part of the abbey's turbulent history.

    1. Douglas, I think they were just a flight of fancy.

  8. I often wonder what went through the minds of those who carved such monuments and gargoyles but they certainly created some astonishing expressions.

  10. Maybe I could trade you some snow and cold for your wet and cold? I will spend a couple of hours Sun out birding with a group.

    1. Red, you could, it's not the rain so much as the fact that it never gets light.

  11. The Scottish Borders are so appealing - steeped in history and peaceful - like The Land That Time Forgot. A rolling agricultural landscape that is softer and more forgiving than most other parts of Scotland.

    1. YP, the history was anything but peaceful. It must have been a medieval war zone. I prefer the Highlands but there is some wonderful light to be found in the Borders.

    1. That is Saint Adrian - the patron saint of virgins.

    2. Hilary, I find the faces fun but have no idea if that was the intention.

  13. When I saw the RFC in the first pic I wondered if it would stand for the same as it does here. Sure enough. Somehow I expected the grounds would be a bit more grand. If they were in this country it would be hallowed ground. YP's comment about your patron saint prompted me to look him up. "Saint Hadrian is protector against the plague, and patron of old soldiers, arms dealers, butchers and communications phenomena." Wonder if he looked like any in the abbey.

    1. Pauline, Scottish rugby clubs are nearly all concentrated in the Borders. This is quite smart it has a big concrete grandstand. I'll get some more pictures of it.
Melrose is only a small town and there are at least another five big clubs within a twenty mile radius.
