IS IT ME? (25/01/14)

Yesterday while I was failing to film Dippers and dodging packs of Huskies I recorded a few minutes video. When it is was rendered it looked the best yet. There was a bit of camera shake but with the wind gusting 30MPH I wasn’t surprised.

image This screen grab will enlarge with a click. Am I doing something stupid?

What a mess it looks on YouTube. It looks fine when played back on Media Player.

It is much better on Vimeo. Though I haven’t worked out how to get Live Writer to access Vimeo. I hope the above link works.

The weather is atrocious here. I’ll dig a good book out.

Tomorrow looks much better.

  2. Those settings look good to me as they should equate to 1080p which YouTube is supposed to support. My only question would be what were the properties of the original video (frame size, frame rate etc.) as maybe something odd is happening in the conversion that youtube is seeing that vimeo is ignoring.

    1. Okay looking at this further something really weird is going on. I've just grabbed the video from YouTube so I could take a closer look and it has resized it 1280x494. Now that clearly not the same aspect ratio as you encoded it at. So what has happened is that it has resized your video to keep the right ratio and then added black bars down the side. Very odd indeed. Maybe try for a lower resolution (720p instead of 1080p) and see if it behaves -- I doubt you'd tell much difference in quality after YouTube had re-encoded anyway.

    2. Mark, sorry for the delay. I lost 3G during a violent sleet storm and have only just got it back.
Canon vdeo was shot at 1920x 1080 at 23.97fps. An odd number I know.
I have looked further and Vimeo has used 720 as a default at 24fps.
      Thanks for your help.
I'll see what other settings Canon has and see if it helps. H264 HQ seems to be in order.
It is taking well over an hour a minute to upload but then my signal keeps disappearing.

    3. I sympathise with the weather I got caught in a violent hailstorm with thunder and lightening thrown in for good measure on the way home on Thursday. Not a fun experience.

Your camera thinks it's American. The 23.97fps is the American NTSC framerate. UK televisions use PAL at 25fps. Mind you that shouldn't really make any difference to YouTube especially as you have kept the framerate constant throughout the processing. I'm still baffled as to why YouTube did such a strange resize job, it makes no sense to me.

    4. I'll shoot some more tomorrow Mark. I suspect that the HD or Hq settings are probably messing things up. The camera supports several formats. I'll choose a simple one.

  3. To attract the elusive michaela strachanus bird you need to put down some bait. Perhaps a box of "Dairy Milk" or a bottle of "Blue Nun". This wildlife video could have done with some more of your Anglo Saxon canine reprimands - cursing at Molly and Alf. In fact David Attenborough could learn a trick or two from you.

    1. YP, I suspect she has headed south again for the winter.
I had to bin several minutes as the dogs buggered off with half a dozen Huskies. They pull a little pram type thing. The Huskies seemed a bit bemused by my two joining their parade. The Busher or musher or pusher or whatever he's called wasn't best pleased. I suspect he thought my two joining in the fun made him look a bit of a twat....the pram thingy and his big hairy parka did that for him.
If they are doing it tomorrow I'll get some pictures of balmpots chasing dogs on a cart.

    2. PS. I saw one with a Davy Crockett hat. I'll take an MP3 recorder and if I can keep my face straight request an interview.

  4. Maybe the quality on YouTube is not excellent but I wouldn't describe it as a mess. I think it would be good to get Alf and Molly or whatever animals are in the area in the video if the birds you are after don't show.

    1. David, will shoot some of them. This was more to sort out the problem not for entertainment. I don't enjoy video and it knows it.

  5. Adrian. On my machine the YouTube copy looks better. Taking into account the shallow depth of field the parts in focus are really sharp even at full screen. The only thing I can't work out is why it doesn't fill the small YT frame. I get black bars all round but full screen actually fills the screen!. I wonder what the choices are under Preset and Aspect. YT does seem very choosy. It took me a while to find the correct combination of instruction on saving.

In Corel Video Studio I use mpeg-4 AVC (1280x720) Saves upload time with a smaller file size. Don't know whether you have a similar choice there.

  6. I can't help with the video technicalities I'm afraid Adrian, but I think Mark has got that sorted.
My set up is very different to yours, and easier for my fuddled brain to understand.
Be interesting to see Davy Crocket and the huskies.
And Michaela, if you can get her.

    1. Keith, it is clear and cold out now. I'll go for a wander tomorrow and see if I can find Husky Man or People.
I understand little of the video malarkey.

  7. A thought. I wonder how soon after uploading to YT you checked it. I seem to remember they use a two stage process so it can be seen before they have finished the final processing which does improve it.

    1. John, it does look better now than I remember it. I will leave it longer next time. It took ages to upload but then 3G is not good here and the place is busy with skiers and Husky drivers at weekends.
Many thanks for your help. I'll keep trying.

  8. in fact, the video is a little dancing up and down.. Such a pity because I love the idea of the flow of water and the immobility of the rocks, and the wind in the trees is gorgeous. is the voice of the narrator yours voice?

    1. Laura, it was shot with an 800mm lens and it was very windy. I'll re-shoot it while I'm here.
Yes it is my voice. Not the barking that is the Huskies.

  9. The videos add a lot of good info about the places you visit. Keep them up! How in the world did you end up with a 800mm? Is that from Canon?

    1. Maria, It's the 400mm + 2X Extender.
I'll keep trying with video but am far from happy.
