THE STATION. (28/01/14)

Yesterday the dogs and I caught the bus into Aviemore. I needed to get some provisions, tobacco being a priority. It was almost a disaster. I had a quick glance at the timetable and noticed that the busses run from the Ski Station, past the campsite and on to Aviemore every hour. Perfect.

I should have paid more attention as there is a three hour gap in the schedule and I caught the last bus for three hours._MG_2816

_MG_2818 copy The station is a superb building. I wish I’d had longer to take photographs but I heard three people discussing how to get to Glenmore Lodge. I offered to split the taxi fare withe them so had to get my skates on. A lucky outcome.

It’s raining icy rain today. If it clears up I’ll go for a good walk later.

  1. HI Adrian That certainly is a lovely building. It was fortunate that you heard those people talking and got a ride with them. I was up at Aviemore the other day an saw Snow Buntings.

    1. It's a beautifully preserved station. Thanks for the link. I was thinking of coming back here in February. I see the trains are steaming on selected days. I'll have a look. Douglas did mention an Engine Shed. I'll look for that and try and blag my way in.

    1. Trevor, the sunshine comes and goes here faster than I can press the shutter button. It is the focal point of what otherwise is a rather dismal place.
It is good that the sun shines on one prior to one getting soaked.

    1. David, it's a good Victorian station. The place has all the necessities for life but can be a bit depressing. I come to Scotland for the countryside. It does have the odd good town but I can't say Aviemore is one of them.

    1. Bob you would like it here. Ancient pockets of Caledonian woodland. And thirty odd miles of graded paths. The paths are far wider than your dune buggy so no problems.

  9. I love pictures where you have sharp brightness and well-defined colour in the foreground and dark, brooding cloud cover in the distance. The contrast is so dramatic. (ie - your second picture)

  10. YP, I can sit for ages in turbulent weather for the self same thing. I rarely find front lit storm clouds but I did and was happy. I always shoot RAW. And my default setting on Canon is 2/3rds under exposed. You nor I can recover blown highlights but both film and digital can be pushed for shadows. I love what lurks in the shadows.

    1. I was very fortunate with the light. It is being used for offices and shops now as well as still being a station.

  16. Adrian the loco' shed when I was kid is up the line from the station. You need to walk in the direction of what was know as Dalfaber Village (if i spelt that right) which was a Barrat holiday developement (my aunt used to live in the white houses next to holiday villag before moving to Aberdeen), from recollection there was a normal plain bridge with a fast flowing stream and the old shed was near the bridge, if it helps (probably not) there was a public footpath too.
I lost count the number of times I arrived at that station and even though Aviemore has got bigger and bigger I'm glad the station still looks like something out of a Harry Potter book.

  17. Thanks Douglas. I see it on the map. I have the stream and something marked as workshop. I'll have a look next time I'm in town.

  19. A trip down memory lane for me, wow it was 20 years ago, where does the time go. Classic shot of a Highland railway footbridge, Given another chance maybe I may pay more attention to the structure now that the real passenger trains on the summer saturday service have long gone.
You've managed to capture quite a bit in the last shot, great stuff.

  20. Jay, it is without doubt the best bit of Aviemore.
