WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY (16/03/11)

Tuesday was a complete right off, not often I say that about a day. It rained and rained and was freezing and really horrible.

Today I walked up to Glenridding for a paper and to give the dogs an airing, it was nasty cold and foggy.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Barnacle Geese in the fog………….they were on land but the dogs spotted them before I did. A lovely small goose and relatively quiet for the species. It’s odd they are the only geese to be seen on Ullswater. They must defend their territory as there are few Mallard and Swans.

What follows is an extravaganza of reflections.

_3162387_88_89_90_91_tonemapped_edited-1      These two are HDR. it was misty when we set out so thought it would do the job…………no need.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   Near perfect reflections.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  We wandered along. it’s a grand walk.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Now I’m going to have serious words with my camera………..This is not infrared or overly manipulated. Weird is what it is. I tried converting it to black and white, it was worse…..I should be able to replicate this effect. lets just pray I do not find out how to.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA     Silver Point……..the end of our stroll. In effect half of it as we had to wander back.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA      Good job we did, it’s clouding over again…………..it does that in these parts.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA      Spotted this Peacock Butterfly not in the best of condition……..not surprised it was minus two Celsius last night and precious little warmer today out of the sun…………..be freezing if there were a wind. Poor mite! let us hope for a good butterfly year. Last year was terrible where I was. The year before there were thousands of them.

That’s all for today. I do have dozens of reflections. They are one of my favourite subjects. So a good day for me.

  1. I do like the first landscape shot with the clouds and slightly rippled reflections.

As for your weird result - I have seen the odd one from my Canon when it is on rapid continuous shooting, as though it can't keep up with itself in processing and storing and the exposure goes all to pot.

  2. I'm with John; that first landscape is a cracker.

  3. Oh my goodness, there are some beautiful images here. I'm going to have to learn about HDR. I love the first one of the geese too.. such lovely lighting.

  4. John, I'm still having trouble with over enhanced greens and blues with HDR. I thought I'd solved the problem and may have. The camera was set for video and I didn't reset all settings so WB was still on auto. HO! HUM!....I shoot RAW so in theory could pull back the white balance. Being half colour blind I go on the channel histograms. Maybe I'll have another look at the launch picture. It's always a rush posting the same day.

Keith, I prefer the third one. It was a cracking day. The composition is not all it should be but viewed large it is my favourite.

Hilary, just download Photomatix. It's free to play with and cheap if you want to get rid of their watermarks. Shoot in Raw drop the black slider to zero pick a white balance you fancy. save as a TIFF and upload into the HDR software. If you have trouble and you will let me know and I'll do a Seeing To with screen grabs. The lighting for the geese was down to nature. I would have lit them in gold, red and blue. I can't help it.

  7. Images 3 & 4 Superb.
I think I need to spend more time with the camera here and less on the hills. Although I remember the peace and tranquility as I sat on top of Arnison crag for an hour watching The Lady of the Lake arrive and depart from Glenridding pier on a hot summers day. Magic.

  8. Looking at these is giving me more of my 'must get back to my old Lake District photos' feelings. If only digital photography had been around when I was using Kodachrome X and Agfa and - for a few films when it first came out - the under-whelming Ilfrachrome.

  9. Graham, the Lakes are grand in winter for about two days a month.
I was never a Kodachrome fan. Fuji Velvia with is super saturation was my favourite. I believe it is back in production as is Instamatic film. Not that i would go back to film. Selling faster than Hot dogs at a fair according to my purveyor of all things snappy.

Jay, get up the hills whilst you can. Plenty of time for taking pictures when you get too decrepit for walking.
