I DON’T KNOW WHAT I FOUND. (09/05/15)

It was wet and really horrible out this morning. I had a bit of a colouring in hour then read a book and by lunchtime the sun was shining and the insects were out. _V0G8225 A 30pattern as opposed to yesterdays 45o ones if it is wet again I may try for more mirrors. They pass the time on though what use they are I have no idea.

The insects were being very uncooperative today but it’s no good expecting them to be good all the time.

_V0G8242    I think this is a Folded Wing Crane Fly; Limonia nubeculosa but it’s antenna look more like a Common Crane Fly but it is far too small. I’ll investigate the matter further.

That’s all for today as all the other pictures are far worse than these.

  1. Adrian, isn't it a bit early for the common crane fly? They always seem to emerge in late summer. But I'm no expert!

    1. Frances, I think this is too small for a Common Crane Fly but can't think what else it could be. Leather jackets hatch throughout the year and as far as I can work out Tipula oleracea are generally early and T. padulosa are more prevalent in autumn.

  3. I've never looked close enough to see 'string of pearls' antenna like that, Adrian. Wonderful stuff! I take it that your kaleidoscope image is a wasp again?

    1. Richard, not all crane flies have antenna like this. They are wonderful on this one.
The kaleidoscope is a bit on a laurel flower.

    1. Douglas, it seemed to be eating sap or something. I never knew they ate anything. I thought they emerged, flew about being a nuisance had a bonk and died.

  6. It's a good thing you told me you were using mirrors or I would have no idea what was going on. Bugs do move faster when it's nice.
