SO MUCH TO LEARN. (04/05/15)

It was spitting rain first thing; after breakfast the sun was shining but it is cold in the wind. Undaunted I took the macro lens for a walk. This is what we found._V0G8203  Lots of wet things. This isn’t a thistle but I don’t know what it is.

_V0G8195  A Violet. It doesn’t have the white sticky up bit so maybe it got blown away or it is a Marsh Violet.

_V0G8193   I don’t know. This gets embarrassing after a while but it is a pretty little flower.

_V0G8191   Ivy Flower.

_V0G8190    One of the Cup Fungi. I think it is  Peziza micropus. It is a young one. I’ll have to take the 100mm lens to fit a few older ones into the frame.

_V0G8198    This I am pleased with. It is far from perfect but at 3:1 my best yet taken in a stiff breeze. I’ll try and ID it later. There are lots of them and they usually fly away but this one was busy cleaning it’s whiskers._V0G8196 I only include this as I managed to get it’s eye in focus. something I’m inordinately happy about.

On our return life put on it’s animal husbandry face. I found a deer tick on Molly so both dogs have had a shot of Front Line. I then removed the tick and carefully separated it from dog hairs.

_V0G8183 Deer Tick; Ioxdes ricinus. It’s not a spider but is a relative. It was also a pain as it refused to stop on the set for it’s picture to be taken. This one is engorged with Molly blood. I have spent ages looking for normal ones on bracken stalks but never found one. They are very small before they start sucking blood. That’s my excuse. Not bad at 4:1 and 5:1. I think I used the 5X scale on both. Sorry about that.

That’s all for today, I shall go out to make the most of a sunny day.

    1. R.mac, I'll keep trying. Ticks aren't very nice.

  2. The fungi looks like ears. Hate ticks too ~ I lost a cat to a tick.

    1. Carol, it feels a bit like an ear. Ticks are a fact of life in Scotland. Unpleasant they are but rarely fatal here.

  4. How do you get a 1:3? I thought macro lenses took you to 1:1.

    1. Thanks John. I had got my ones and threes the wrong way round. It's 3X magnification. I've altered it now, thanks again.

    2. I had it backwards too. I realize it's 3x magnification. I am just not sure how you get it.

    3. John, this is with the Canon MP-E 65mm. You can often find them used as they are the very devil to get in focus. I use it with an MR-14EX ring flash but others use a tripod and cable release. The lens will go to 5X.

    1. Ta Bob, I think it is one of the snipe flies.

  7. The first wet thing when first seen in the thumbnail version looked a bit like a peacock's tail to me. The things with many legs I scroll hastily by, they're bad enough when they're tiny...

    1. Monica, it's some sort of flower bud. I will watch what it turns into.

  8. You DO have wonderful toys! But you also have the patience and skill--and talent to make them work so well.

    1. Bill, I treat them badly as well. I really hope to crack this macro and close up business.

  9. The first photo is beautiful. The others are superb. Ticks are definitely one of the least loveable of insects.

    1. Graham, they are better than I got this afternoon. It was too windy to focus. Ticks are pretty revolting things better close up than in real life though.

  11. There I was, scrolling happily after being enchanted with your first image and enjoying the others. But the ticks put a stop to that. Hate those repulsive things.

  12. You had a great day out there with your macro even if it was a rotten day. I'm impressed with the number of insects you got when the weather is bad.
