LEPI?.. LEOPI?..LEPHY?..BUTTERFLIES! (07/09/09)

image
image      Not moved far, stopping here a couple of nights to go bog trotting. see if I can find some more 'I don't know what they ises'.
Today is all butterflies so if they are not your cup of tea it's time to move on. Nothing rare but another first for me this year with a Red Admiral, in fact dozens.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA     RED ADMIRAL......Aristocrats and aren't they just.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA    SMALL TORTOISESHELL.....Another aristocrat.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA    PEACOCK.......You've got it, an aristocrat.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA          TWO PEACOCKS AND A RED ADMIRAL.......After messing about with Small Tortoiseshells the other day I believe this is an example of being 'Hoist by ones own Petard'.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA           PAINTED LADY.......these are starting to look a little washed out.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA         PEACOCK.....Most definitely an aristocrat. Never seen them do this before, it appeared to be having a drink. Smart little tongue it's got or whatever a butterflies tongue is called. Not the most glamorous of situations, an old oil drum.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA       A Red Admiral to finish. Pretty windy but patience gave me a couple of good ones. I'm pretty satisfied with the Sigma 50mm-500mm, heavy, needs a monopod but gives me results that macro failed to do, the subject always did a runner before I'd even fitted the lens.
We'll see what tomorrow brings.

  1. I love butterflies. It's been a really bad year for them here. You've done really well to get all these in such a short space of time.

  2. Ta CJ about two hours. Plenty of butterflies about but all Aristocrats, the odd wall brown, no frittilaries or blues

  3. The Peacock on the oil drum was my favourite. Lovely shot. Great tongue!
