A BAD WORKMAN (27/11/09)

A bad workman blames his tools, and I presume a bad photographer blames the scene, the light or in this case both. The toys were well and truly out of my pram today. Half way across the street in fact!

Woke to the now familiar sound of beating rain, by nineish it seemed to have cleared so we set off for a stroll down to Par. Only small light showers today, one every ten minutes! The camera was in and out of it's bag more often than a rabbit in the magicians hat. As I've said before you get what I get and today it's about as bad as it gets.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA    A Corner of Par Sands....These boulders look to be part of a training wall, why I'm afraid I can't tell you.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   A Bit Of Marble Statuary.....Door, curtain, stairs and books, again I'm at a loss. It's sighted at the entrance to a miniature nature reserve and a larger static caravan site. Appears to have little connection with either. Possibly posh fly tipping?

Having exhausted the obvious possibilities we set off for the harbour, four hours later, only joking it's not quite that far, we arrived, more chance of gaining access to the royal mint.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  The docks are part of this china clay drying and milling plant, in fact Par is part of this china clay drying and milling plant. Unfortunately only about a third of it seems to be still working. I suspect we can blame the Chinese and their, undoubtedly inferior, but no doubt cheaper china clay.

For further adventures we set off to Charlestown a private harbour owned by The Square Sail Company and set for many a film and movie. Got to be photogenic. I now have undying respect for the skill and artistry of professional cinematographers. In a moment you will see why.

Denied access to the interesting bits, I was left with bits to shoot, here are the bits.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA A china clay loading shute.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   A hopper from a loading shute, like this old scrap, nice textures.

The dock and a urinal. Very Calvinist round here, all this work when they have the whole Atlantic not six feet away.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   Bowsprit of a square rigger, I was ages looking for an angle that would show the complete ship. To no avail, access to the dock denied and a damn great mobile crane not helping.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe best I could do.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA The Shipwreck Museum, Oh! And a rainbow.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  This is a nice place, so pay no heed to my jaundiced view. Be warned it's not dog friendly!

I want to visit Fowey just over the hill. Sunday looks to be favourite as tomorrows forecast is awful. Have a good weekend.

  1. If this is "as bad as it gets" then sign me up for your next photo tour! LOL

The top shot is incredible - I *really* like the lighting in this one. You captured a great range of colour and texture, good job!

The hopper on the loading chute is really great too - I love that rust colour and you chose an interesting perspective.

I'd say it was a successful day, myself. :o)

  3. Thanks Penny, I hate blown highlights don't mind shadow clipping too much. All I say is thank god for Photoshop and digital. Imagine 19 shots on medium format, I'd have gone mad. No, I wouldn't have gone out.

  4. Penny, anti I would say, not on the beach, nor on the dock, nor all but one of the pubs. To celebrate had lunch there, last one on the right going out. The R'something Arms. Food OK, Beer good.

  5. I reckon yer too hard on yerself. These are excellent. Especially like that old hopper.

Now we need to know the significance of that bit of 'art' outside the nature reserve.

  6. The first shot looking down the Par River out to Sea is a beauty. I have tried the same shot many times and have never been really happy with them.
The pub is the Rashleigh Arms.
I like the nitty gritty far from pretty shots of Charlestown . A goods days photographic work Adrian.

  7. Methinks you put on your hair shirt by mistake this morning. I'd settle for "as good as it gets any day"!! That first shot is fantastic - and the rest are great, too.

  8. Keith, Pauline, You know how it is. They could have been a lot better had I set the first shot up on a tripod, used filters taken multiple exposures. Taken Time! But it was cold wet and I'm making excuses. All days out are good days, the moaning is less about how I feel and more about the story.
Trevor, That's it Rashleigh Arms, Don't suppose your local knowledge runs to an explanation of the statue? Would have been good to get close to the ships always good details round them. May drop Square Sail an e-mail enquiring, probably cost but with the right light would be worth it.

  9. I think the urinal is my favourite - but then I'm always keen to know where the loo is. As for the statuary - that beats me. No doubt once it was explained it would be obvious but in my vioew a work of art shouldn't need explaining.

  10. John, somehow suspect you would not be thanked for using it. Rather begs the question. Where did they go whilst it was under construction?
