WINTER HAS ARRIVED (25/11/09)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA    FALMOUTH HARBOUR.......After another night of wind and squalls, we woke to find that to add to the joys of life the temperature had dropped to minus three hundred. A slight exaggeration maybe but a pretty cheerless day.

Went down into town to find the ferry was cancelled, it's fine at the Falmouth side but not over at St Mawes. Folk were in fear of being drowned. Which reminds me of an old Cornish saying.

'Those who have no fear of the sea are often drowned...Those that fear the sea are only drowned now and again.'

As I had promised Molly a boat ride we took the ferry over to Flushing. No, not the one with eels, soapy tasting cheese and clogs, the Cornish one.

I forget whether this is a Board of Trade or Admiral Fitzroy barometer. Once most ports would have had one, the majority have been stolen or vandalised so this was a welcome sight.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Behind this locked door lies.....A water tap.....This dock used to service the Mail Packets and this is Flushing's  solution to their pinching water.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Flushing.....I didn't do the place justice, freezing cold, and we were well and truly soaked, twice. Will try and get back because I feel there are some good pictures to be had.

We caught the ferry and retired to the pub. Ostensibly to warm up, as I'm sure you will understand.

  1. I'll look forward to your return there Adrian. It does look a lovely place.
I hope the vandals keep away from the barometer; it's a fine piece indeed.

  2. Suspect It should be OK. It's lasted this long. Stopped off here years ago and a quiet place then as now.

  4. Dawntreader, be OK with thermals.....Now...Which locker are they in? More to the point did I launder before stowing them? Cheers.
