A BIRD IN (09/05/10)

Just back from the Cuckoo hunt, I’m at a loss to know how you proper birders out there do it…………Regular as clockwork there is cuckoo broadcast at 0600h and 1800h, not today not even a ‘cuck’ or for that matter an ‘oo’.  Still a lovely evening for a walk, the wind is away and the skies have cleared. You could have been in line for a decent panorama but I was too tired to wander back for the tripod and all the gubbins.

A bird in the hand is worth one in the bush…………………………………

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA           A dwarf Red Kite in a Gorse bush……….could be visa versa……….Sorry, did this far too quickly whilst waiting for the talking heads to shut up and start the GP.  To hedge my bets I chucked out some peanuts, sunflower seeds and meal worms. Plenty of food for the local birds without their having to resort to Pet Shop Best. They deserve Plenty after this winter.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA              A one eyed Carrion crow, dread to think what it has found……………..

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA               Fortunately it’s other eye is fine. I usually refrain from political comment. I have this time………Called him Gordon!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA                The clowns of the bird world………….A Starling trying to defend it’s worm…………………

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA                And failing to ‘Boss Hog’…………They are entertaining, one wonders why they don’t just grab the worm and swallow it!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA                A more delicate being the Pied Wagtail it stalks it’s food.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA                  This Thrush, Mistle I suspect but knowing my luck it’ll be a Song Thrush! It grabs and swallows.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA                   This is the Song Thrush….I wish!… Same bird….Damned if I can tell the beggars apart!

That’s it, have a good week……..Should the Carrion Crow turn out to be a Raven,,,,,,,,A one eyed Raven at that, spare me, One is a touch sensitive today. Though not as pissed off as Lewis Hamilton I bet, all that effort, surprised he wasn’t in floods of tears!

  1. Adrian, a cracking post again. You are amusing. As you are sensitive I shall refrain from comment on the ID's then! Lewis Hamilton lacks age and experience! Young men are too eager. Great shots.

  2. Angie I find it hard to credit that I got an ID wrong, all the best.

  3. You're making this birding lark look too easy.

  4. Adrian, I must be your favourite commenter because you know I will NEVER correct you on your bird or plant IDs. I haven't the foggiest, honestly. I just know what looks pretty and I don't eat ANYTHING in the bush because I have no idea what it is. LOL. Seems smart enough right?

You've got some great shots here... The Pied Wagtail looks very entertaining to watch!

  6. Splendid Red Kite photo. I've never managed one at rest and they are not easy to photograph in the air! I'm not saying anything else (LH just went home and kicked the - metaphorical - cat!)

  7. Keith, They are easy taken from inside the van.

    Krista, I'm trying to learn.

Trevor, The Red Kite is a composite image, The bird was in a cage, sad that.

    John, thanks.

GB, Suspect LH is used to it by now.
