DENT (31/01/11)

image

image We are in a hard to get to place……..one I’ve wanted to visit for a while. This morning we awoke to clear skies and a moderate frost so off we toddled to the new lakes……..nothing….Hey! That’s gone and saved me making a fool of myself with bad bird pictures.

The road in here is very narrow and twisty………It’s bin day……..milk collection day…..builders merchants delivery day……Beer topping up day….I spent more time in reverse than forward. No new dents so the job was satisfactory.

This place is a village rather than a town but I’m glad I came. Cobbled streets, a massive church and two pubs. The industry is tourism but  at this time of year in thick fog Dent is gorgeous. Previously the source of income was wool……………big knitters they are round here.

As is my want we got parked up, had a brew and went for a wander. Loads to photograph here.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERALots of cloning out to do as well. Railings in this case.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   The Wesleyan Chapel…………..Looks more Quaker to me but that’s what it says it is.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA We didn’t go in but it does look inviting………It’s dog friendly…….Pity I haven’t a horse they have a mounting block. Nothing to tie the horse to though. I’ll drop in for a drop tomorrow.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Any hostelry I can make look good  or they can, in fog, has got to be worth a visit.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIt does have it’s twee side.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA The church of Saint Andrew………….is it me or was he the favoured saint in the Yorkshire Dales. A conundrum….wasn’t he one of the fishermen disciples? Could be me I may be thinking of another.

The following pair of images are hand held exposure blended and fired off at massive ISO numbers. The church is okay but not fantastic.

_1311326_27_28_29_30_tonemapped_edited-1Laugh away…………..My church interiors are on a par with my bird pictures…………….It was awful dark in there.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAInto the light……………..It is awful hard snapping in fog.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA It gets no easier.

A grand little village. It will do me for a week or more……………….I have WiFi and it only cost a pound. Tis a tad slow but…………..but, but what…………..it works.

I’ll prey on the prayers for their influence over the weather gods.

Visibility is down to a couple of hundred metres. This valley lies east west…………Should be stunning at dawn or dusk. You have fun. all the best.

  1. Olá, amigo!
    Passei para conhecer seu espaço.
As fotos da aldeia ficaram muito bonitas.
Enquanto as admirava tive uma sensação de paz e tranquilidade... imagino que seja assim nesse lugar.
    Boa semana!

  2. Great to see the photographs of Dent. Soon be seeing the Sedgewick (I think) memorial. The Sun Inn is a nice cosy public house and I guess you will be spending a few happy hours in there. Great pictures to jog the memory of a lovely small village.

Just wondering if you have yet paid a visit to Sedburgh (a book town). A great place to browse away an hour or two.

  5. One of the things about your blog is the number of places that you visit that I've never been to. Passing by Dent station on the train is no where near it but as close as it comes for me. Must make a trip here sometime although it 's off the beaten track. The white church reminds me a little of Newlands and the streets are fascinating.

  6. Magia, Oi, obrigado, é um lugar bonito e tranquilo. Desculpe o meu Português não é muito bom.

Trevor, I have been wanting to come here for a year. A fine spot. It is Sedgewick. A damn great car was parked in front of it. Drove through Sedburgh but didn't stop. I will have a look.

Trevor it is a grand wee place..........a bit damp at present.

Keith, it is still very rural.....and I dread to think what it would be like in summer. Apart from fog and rain it's fine this time of year.

Jay, it's worth a visit. Not as good as Hawes but it is half the size. If the rain doesn't stop the white church will be getting a visit.

  7. It is a tranquil sort of town, the pub itself is worth to spend a number of hours. Brilliant pictures without the dents.

  8. Lots of interest there Adrian. If you can afford to keep a horse you can afford a groom to hold the horse still while you mount / fall off lol.
Your lens does a good job of cutting through the fog.

  9. Bob, almost deserted it is. Hard to foul up with this material to work on.

    Laura, thank you.........glad you approve.

John, I suspect you are right. I'd happen be better letting the groom ride.
This filter is a cracker B&W UV anti haze. They are a bit pricey but as I scratch the cheapo filters I replace with these. Photoshop also plays it's part. If you duplicate the background layer convert it to B/W and set blend mode to overlay it really is a haze ridder. You have to drop the opacity of the B/W layer as it does a bit too good a job.

  10. Yet another place to which, so far as I can recall (ie could be right, could be wrong) I've never been. Yet another place to add to the list. I'm getting a tad concerned: as the balance of my life gets inevitably shorter the list of places I want to visit in the UK alone gets longer. But then if you carry on the way you are perhaps I'll never actually have to visit - just read.

  11. Graham it is a tiny place. Were the streets wider one could drive through it in twenty seconds. If you have a car there are three superb railway viaducts within a few miles. it lies about six miles west of the Ribblehead viaduct.
