It's amazing what a wet weekend can engender. Last week I found some Water Buffalo not five miles from my home in Derbyshire. I took little interest at first but having got the pictures I'd come to the area for, noticed that they were very photogenic, big brown eyes, long eyelashes and the clincher for a photographer they are inquisitive and seemingly gentle creatures.
Under the mistaken impression that all buffalo come from either Africa or India I posted the results of my ignorance on Flickr, 'Delhi or Derbyshire'? Not the first time in my life I've displayed muppetry for the world to laugh at! Yesterday, due to a combination of circumstances, (a) Grand Prix practice only lasts two hours, one hour if they dispensed with the talking heads! And (b) It never stopped raining. I consulted the source of all knowledge and found that their ancestry is more likely to be Bulgarian, Rumanian or possibly Italian. If it's raining today there's loads you wanted to know about them HERE.
And a great picture from Rod Buckle
Below I have posted a selection of pictures. All were taken with a prime 35mm lens and with the field gate between the snapper and the subject. A zoom lens would have been better but I couldn't rake up the enthusiasm to change it. As things turned out I still spent a good ten minutes removing buffalo snot from both camera and lens. I warn you they are curious, or perhaps it was a case of reciprocity, I enlivening their day as much as they improved mine.
Pity about the ear tags! There's a map below that will help you find them.
Have a happy bovine experience.
I know ear tags are necessary but they are a real pain when it comes to photographing cattle. Even our home grown beasts all seem to have them nowadays. Nevertheless, some great shots you got there.
