A BREATH OF FRESH AIR (02/08/10)

image

imageWe are staying at the Tan Hill Inn, the highest pub in Great Britain and obviously at this time of year attracting walkers and tourists. Have had a wander round and it’s just what the doctor ordered. So will hang around. I’ve just had a liquid lunch just the two…….Promise………My nose is sprouting twigs….And one for the road. Great!

No road, I'm parked up on the pub car park.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA The view from Tan Hill……..It might look like nothing but nothing is sometimes all one needs.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA The vista from the truck, absolutely magic. One could spend a few weeks waiting for good light and when the light comes this countryside will be enchanting.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  The camper and the Tan Hill Inn  one thousand seven hundred and thirty two feet above sea level. A different world to the one I left and only about ten miles away……….This country never ceases to amaze. Worried the truck a little, hauling itself up here.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Winter transport fresh from the Antarctic. A little poetic licence, not quite fresh.

I arrived and the Landlord introduced himself. Not quite right upstairs if you ask me but who am I to judge a fellow loony? No fee for camping but an honesty charity bottle…..Not daft here… it takes notes!….. Was thinking fifty pence. They open at 0730h for breakfast and beer. I’ll let you know what time they shut………I’ll ask them to write the time on my hand as I’m carried out. These beggars will probably inscribe on my forehead. so be prepared with a mirrow….. Sorry mirror………..Unaccustomed to the falling down water!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA           Inside, a pretty normal boozer. Candles a little twee perhaps……Criticise if you dare…They’ll tear you into pieces… Verbally. Good banter.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA            Not normal for towns but homely and the proprietors introduce themselves in a right and proper manner.

‘What’s tha called?------Posh truck……..I’m Richie, this is Ian and Sahara's oowt……Art drinking or a wasting mi time?

The Inn is very strange . Odd is what I need, serendipity will guide if you have the nerve to follow. Should you pass this way then don’t miss it. Sheep, dogs, hens and ducks are made equally welcome or if one is of a sensitive disposition, equally unwelcome. The service after the banter is fast superb and efficient.

Tomorrow it’s up with the lark. or possibly out of the pub with the lark for some practice on panoramas. Bet you can’t wait!!

All the best from another day in the life of the mentally unstable. Forgot………. Didn’t recount the tale of an early morning shop…………..It can wait.

Have a good week.

  1. I think that was the place that got snowed in at New Year. It made the national news as they started to run out of provisions for the guests enforced extended stay. Hope you managed to leave ok !!

  7. Matron a grand place to be if a little chilly. Plenty of live music. Plenty of open space. Everything I could ask for.

Keith, no tears as I can come back. Only here for a couple of days this time as back to barnard Castle for the weekend then down to Devon.

  8. Sounds like you're in the right spot for being in top form ;) I'm sure that fresh air will do you good, that's if you remember to leave the pub every so often. You mention you are heading to Devon soon ~ would you make a trip like that in one day, or will you take your time? Are both dogs going? See, you've got me curious. You can tell me it's none of my business ... LOL

  12. Your wit entertains as usual. It takes real skill to appear so daft.

  13. Gb, not an art form I promise I was just made that way. I am daft, being or appearing to be intelligent is the hard part.

  14. A considerable gift that can get people with it through all sorts of situations in life that those of us lesser mortals with a fear of splitting infinitives - never mind anything more adventurous - would give our eye teeth (whatever they are) for.

  15. GB, I was always told to never split an infinitive. To always look before I leap. I was hoping to get two in there. Failed!
