SPELLINGA. (18/09/14)

It’s been a nasty damp day so I thought I’d carve my name from a stick. What a muddle I got in.

I took a picture of a piece of fence, downloaded it to Photoshop, reduced it to a sensible size, mapped it for texture and wrapped it over a stick I’d drawn in Blender. So far so good.stick1   If I say so myself it’s not a bad stick. Quite realistic and by far the best bit of UV compositing I’ve done. For any folk that play in Blender the Node Compositor is daunting but very flexible. I’ve never dared use it before but with another hundred hours practise will master it; maybe.

I then set to and carved ADRIAN’S IMAGES out of my stick. I got it all sorted out, lit it with a couple of virtual lights got the virtual camera in position. I did a quick five sample render to check it was something like then increased the particles from five hundred to twenty five thousand and set it rendering at one hundred samples.

I went apple picking, popped back to check after an hour or so and realised I hadn’t spill chucked.

stick      What a Muppet I am, I got an extra ‘A’ on the end.

It was good fun. I’m glad I found it funny. I only swore for a minute or two.

Tomorrow I’ll find out whether I’m in a foreign country.

  1. That's bloody clever.
I wouldn't worry about the spolling.

    1. Keith, it's something I'm usually well aware of. I often pop a post-it with the word on as it is easy to concentrate on the textures, physical properties and blends and be oblivious to the spelling. Just Muppetry really.

  2. You are getting quite crafty with the 3D, an artform I have yet to dabble in.

    1. Mersad, CS6 can do it but Blender is free and I prefer it. I tend to use both but the commands are different Shift+D for duplicate in Blender as opposed to Ctrl+J in Adobe and that is just the start.
      It's good fun.

  3. That's brilliant, even with the spelling mistake. Next up a woodpecker doing the carving :)

    1. Mark, I could have done with making the letters a bit more slippery. I will try again on the next rainy day and also add a smoother finish to the letters. They are on the same displacement map as the stick.
I did think of a woodpecker but I've not used bones yet. Nor have I used Dope sheets. I suspect that there is little than cannot be achieved. It is immensely powerful I haven't done enough yet to visualize from large particles and quick renders to imagine the finished job. I also have trouble backtracking to solve the inevitable cuckoos.
I may need a bigger computer.

    2. Cuckoos...I should have written woodpeckers.

  4. Getting an A on your end can be extremely painful but not as painful as having an end up your A (So I am told!).

    1. YP, I was going down that route but peoples grandchildren read my blog. I do my best to be careful.
When I noticed the 'A' I did say well I'll be buggered but it was only a figure of speech.

  5. I don't know what you're worried about Adrian?...just saw the bloody end off!

Excellent work..I'll give it an A+ (or should that be +A ?)...[;o)

    1. Trevor, I don't work neatly so although I stopped the render and went back to 3D view and found the text bit I couldn't work out how to delete the 'A'.
I'll start again it will be quicker.
      +A I think.

    1. Peter, Blender 3D is free and I have been playing with it off and on for about two years. There are an incredible amount of tools and variables within the tools.
I only do passive stuff but were I to put a chainsaw in then it can be made interactive.
      Way beyond me.

  7. That is so cool!! Terrific job.

I'm not sure if you would get this, but I will give it a shot. In my mother tongue, colloquially, to ask question you say a sentence and end it with an 'A' (spanish a) sound. I was surprised to see your post title :))) To me, it is spelling???

    1. Hilary, so was I. I ought to have taken a few screen grabs. I am getting used to dodging about but am no where near sorting it. Disregarding render time this should be a half hour job not a four hour task.

    1. Graham, playing started out as a hobby and I used to really mess with images.
Now it has become an obsession I try to make the surreal look real.
This is a monster file but I hacked it down with my virtual axe so it would load as a GIFF.
I'll try to do something about my dyslexic finger.

    1. Douglas, I don't know. I knew a signwriter who once did a similar thing. I'm so busy concentrating on the particle shapes and what they will bounce off and what they won't that I just got a bit silly.

  12. That is one cool project! So what if you had an extra A on the end.

    1. Red, I wasn't best pleased but in the scheme of things it is only an 'A'.

    1. McGregor, Ms, not as smart as I need to be. This was only a trial run for something else. I could re-do it in a couple of hours but probably won't bother.

  14. That is way cool. It's hard for me not to think of that as a trick. Shame about the extra letter.

    1. Pauline, it is a trick. I did wonder why the stick wasn't long enough but didn't wonder for long enough why.

    1. John, what an idiot. It wasn't there when I typed the text I can't find when it appeared. The system is part of a little video I want to do. At least the particles look reasonable.

  16. Extra A notwithstanding, I think that's very clever. Thy only question is......why?

    1. Frances, two reasons. One the software and computer processors are there. Two I am working on a two minute video to acknowledge Remembrance Day. I have it all planned but as usual I may have been a little ambitious. You will just have to wait three weeks. This was just playing with materials to get an idea of the workflow.
