LUCKY. (21/11/14)

I wandered into town to get a paper and a few other bits and bobs. It was just before eight, cool and very foggy. I wasn’t going to bother going out with the camera but wanted to have a look at a small church I can see from the van.

_MG_0911        The mist was trying to burn off but there isn’t much warmth in the sun. It kept clearing a bit then rolling back in. It provided much better light than I could have hoped for. The camper is about dead centre.

_MG_0915    High Cross, St Cuthbert’s Melrose. Worth a look but nothing to get too excited about. It’s better than that. If I won the lottery I would have a door like this. Maybe not it’s a bit nouveau riche. Too much red in it for a red. A grand job all the same.

I set off back home and called at the Parish Church. The light was wonderful and responded well to a bit of judicious stroking with the Adjustment brush.

_MG_0919      It is an odd looking building but has a certain appeal. It reminds me of a Masonic Hall with a tower and spire. I mentioned in a previous post that the tower dates from 1810. The church burnt down and they incorporated the tower into this building.

_MG_0922       This is the old Fire Station. It is still written above the door. If I get bored I’ll select the lettering and paint it red but I will have to be very bored as it will be a letter at a time job. There are eleven letters in FIRE STATION twelve counting the gap. It’s the ‘R’, ‘S’ and ‘O’ that take the time. If I do it I’ll be pleased it wasn’t the old Post Office or Police Station they have more curves in them. Not as many curves as there are in the Greengrocers at Moffat but I’d enjoy playing with them.

It was worth taking the camera. Not a brilliant outing but better than I had a right to expect.

I leave here on Monday and head back to Kinross to get the truck tested.

Have a great weekend.

  1. They must have had a little fire engine then, or maybe they just small fires, great photos anyway.

  2. Peter, too small to save the church but then they may have set the fire. Who knows with Christians and their factions? Best ignore all of them.

    1. Bill, I didn't think much of it at the time. I just noticed the fog lift and found a gap in the hedge.

  7. Yes, nice shots, especially the little fire house, my kind of picture. I'm with Bill, though. The first shot has every element--foreground, mid ground, back ground, interesting light. And all of such mundane subjects.

    1. Joanne, the first is a bit messy but does give an idea of the town. The Fire House I have been walking past for a couple of weeks. I am glad that I didn't ignore it today.

    1. Frances, it's a great pity that all things can't be cured so easily.

  9. You were lucky with the light in late November. It is so often grey and not a little dismal as I confirmed when strolling about a section of the Lincolnshire Wolds yesterday.

    1. YP, it only lasted an hour. I just crept out at the right time.

    1. Laura, yes they are both churches. Scottish churches can be a bit uninteresting but these are fine.

    1. Maria, thanks. It is raining at the moment but is forecast to clear later. I'll have a wander then.

  12. Both churches very different but interesting. You did a fine job with poor light. Now that fire hall? It must have been made for one of the hand carts that had a small water tank and some hose!

    1. Red, yes or a small horse drawn one. I haven't found any information on it.

  13. It's the park and trees that add appeal to that church.

  17. That's the thing with churches in Britain: so many interesting styles and types. One thing factions do is increase the number of styles even more.

    1. Graham, I do appreciate them but do believe they were more a statement of power by their sponsors than a matter of homage to a moral code.
Grand they are...I like that. It's honesty with a clock and a stick on.

    2. Agree will do Graham. Absolutely is for monarchs and tossers of that Ilk.
Now I have a Fray Bentos pie to cook or a Tortilla. I'll go for the latter even if it means chopping veg and cooking.

    3. Gosh the iconic Fray Bentos pie in a tin. I had no idea they still existed. Strange things: lots of pastry of varying consistencies, a few pieces of steak and, it was rumoured, kidney - but with the same odds winning as £10 on The Lottery.

    4. Graham, I usually keep a couple in for emergencies. The puddings are better.

  18. You are surrounded by some of the most magical landscape. That first photo is a stunner. I imagine sitting down and watching it all with a nice cup of coffee. Hope the truck doesn't cost too much money.

  20. Nice couple of shots of the church through the trees especially with the light.
I learned a lesson recently when I left the camera at home due the bad weather on what turned out to be the beginning of the day.
