SUNNY SUNDAY. (02/11/14)

It has been a grand day, cooler than it has been so more in keeping with the season. The man flu is at it’s worst but I’m dosing myself with pomegranate and nettle tea laced with honey and of course a dash of eau de vie. I don’t really like fruit teas but it’s a way of making perfectly good whisky taste like medicine.

I couldn’t be bothered taking photographs on our walk which was just a quick hours loop through Tank Wood and up to the old well which I still haven’t found; it must be the fifth time I’ve gone looking for it. I’ll have to ask a local where it is exactly. I’ll ask the gorgeous mummy I saw in the butchers yesterday. I have instructions and know to go through two kissing gates so that bodes well.

I did stop in the old grave yard and had another look round. _MG_0781  I just love it and will come back for further investigation. It’s only a couple of feet tall and the one to the left is even smaller. It marks the grave of Janne Spence wife of Charles Ross who was a Sho maker. I don’t know what a shomaker is but looking at the header I would guess the mason didn’t know how to spell shovel. It dates from 1736 so he was probably just copying the text from something the priest had written. It obviously meant nothing to him as he just gets to the edge of the stone and carries on below. It is a beauty.

_MG_0753      The clock tower of Saint Andrew’s Moffat. It’s a wonderful building and I’ll see if I can get inside and give it a post of it’s own. I ought to have colour popped both clock faces but am not up to that today. I found this a hard ‘Pop’.

Have a good week whatever you are up to.

  1. How old is that grave stone? It looks ancient. I hope you'll find that well. Maybe the 6th time's the charm.

    1. Mersad, very old 1736. All the towns water used to come from the hills in the east. I have been here many times but will find the well this time.

  3. Interesting headstone Adrian, did you check on the side to see if there might be an E or two hiding there somewhere?

Keep taking that 'medicine', I'm sure it'll work in the end?...[;o)

  6. Great tombstone. It's done well for the inscription to be readable after so many years.

    1. John, it must have been deeply incised. I'll have another look at it and see if there are any more.

  9. This is a very different day for you. No trying to bend your mind around some obscure photography challenge.
The stone is fascinating. Obviously the guy who was paying the bill didn't know the difference either.

    1. Red, I doubt he did. I will try and find out what the percentage of literate people was in 1750.

  10. Stay warm and hope the tea works its magic for you. Love the old gravestone, it's in good condition considering its ages.

  11. Sorry you are poorly. When you get a chance do go into the Church. The woodwork in there is amazing. Touch it - it feels like silk - absolutely beautiful.
