THE LAMBTON WORM (30/08/10)

This afternoon saw us toddling along in the opposite direction to that we are accustomed to taking as I noticed this strange shape on Google Maps and decided to investigate.

image    It has got to be the burial site of The Lambton Worm. When we arrived it was difficult to appreciate from the ground.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   Not at all as impressive as it looks from space.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA We passed under the old railway with this rather attractive pillar, a vast improvement on the modern road bridge behind it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe local graffiti artists have done their best to smarten it up. Somehow it’s not the same as dressed stone.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  I don’t know what this is but it appears to be an exploding rose hip. It was attached to a dog rose.

That’s all for now.

  1. That was a nice pillar, they used to make them in those days, and the rose hip, there is another reason, but I can't divulge it, he he.

  2. I think you will find the old steel bridge was a road bridge and the trains ran under it,
the reason i looked it on the map was the weathering on the limestone pillar, the black is quite common when the steam trains all with coal fires blackened the face work running ender the bridges. chuff chuff lots of smoke especially on slight inclines.
the other reason if it was a rail bridge it would not have a step in the steel construction.

  4. Bob, come on let's be knowing.

Life in Egypt, you are quite right a slip from me as I had been walking on the old track bed. Dumb!

Krista, yes it's impossible to appreciate it from the ground.

  5. The Lampton Worm looks to have some good potential for exploring Adrian.
I think the furry red thing is a Bedeguar Gall.

  7. The worm certainly looks more impressive from the air. What would we do now without Google Earth?
