I titled this bondage, a Freudian slip of my finger. I meant tethered
We walked in spitting sleet this morning and the weather has now settled to rain. Horrid it is out so I decided on play time. I decided to try tethered shooting. The advantage of Canon ownership is it is free and for macro work is a brilliant aid for focus. No more scrolling about a tiny screen in live view, it comes up in colour just perfect. If you decide to try it then practise old Anglo Saxon words….. For Catholics Latin ones will no doubt suffice.
Download EOS Utilities….hang about eating porridge, have a cup of coffee, do what you fancy. Then plug everything in. It works just fine. Second time it worked just fine. I just clicks on the screen with my mouse and the camera and flash go off. Using ring flash is a real bonus I set one side of the ring to a third and give it full wack the other side. Gives depth of field or so I’m told. EXIF data says flash forced…I prefer cajoled. I’m no a pedo, rapist or priest. Had I abused it then it is only a bit of expensive lighting. Forced be buggered! Perhaps I should be a priest? Now I know you proper snappers are familiar with this cheating photography.
It was all new to me and came as a revelation on a par with Moses addressing the Israelites. You Hebrews thought you were getting off today. No chance running around slaughtering ones own children. It’s frowned upon but I can understand one sacrificing children. Pain in the bum they are. This is what you get on your computer screen from pissing about with all this………………………………… It is hard work learning. One should do it whist one is young and choose a rip off degree like media studies or the history of art. Piece of cake and only a couple of hours a week over three years. This took me three hours. I am happy….unbelievable being able to adjust flash, aperture, ISO, speed and all whilst laid back and watching porn on the other screen.
I should have concentrated on the job in hand. The lens is the MPE-65mm the macro rack is Velbon. It is much smoother than the Manfrotto rack. I listened to an expert and purchased the former. I lent him the Manfrotto. He said it was crap…………….he’s a kindred spirit. He’s an idiot. Working the MPE is harder than flying Concord or walking on water.
The end result of all my labour……it’s crap as well. Focus stacked in Helicon. it is a daffodil just in case you were wondering, real size 1:1 non of this cheating macro for me. This technology is really hard to work.
That’s why professional photographers can earn a living. long may it remain so. I just get frustrated messing around.
I’ve been trying again.
Have a good weekend.
I think that yours is alright, it makes no sence to me.
ReplyDeleteBob, that makes two of us,

ReplyDeleteWhat aperture did you end up using? I was also going to ask you, when you said that "ring light" flash works better, do you mean the Canon ring lights actually flash too, or stay on all the time?
ReplyDeleteMaria. f/11. This is what Canon call a ring light but it is a flash unit. MR14-EX. I have got a DORR LED Ring light but didn't use it on this occasion.
DeleteI really like the rant you make to lead into the topic of the post. Now we know how difficult things are. As for kids? No! I love em! As for Moses and the Israelites? I'm not sure . Well okay fiction is great !
ReplyDeleteI sometimes wonder what inspires me to start these projects. Whatever else it causes no end of grief.
DeleteA few hours spent tied to your laptop eh? I guess, whatever your bent for weird practices are, it's up to you how you spend your private time!
ReplyDeleteThis first attempt at this strange new fetish of yours could have promising results, so keep bashing away, and you never know things might come right in the end!
The photography looks interesting as well!!
btw. was dropping the 'E' off the end of Concorde meant as a slight to our Gallic cousins or were you just having a Macmillan moment?...[;o)
I'll ignore your innuendo....It's rude.
DeleteI was amazed it worked at all. I'll try to find something more interesting. Tethered capture also allows the use of an interval timer though i've not worked that bit out.
Concorde....ta Trevor....I am a dumb cluck. Too much bashing away!
Hi there - I was (not tense) going to try focus stacking and such like - but after reading this I realise I may need to be very calm if I do!
ReplyDeleteCheers - Stewart M - Melbourne
Stewart, it is good fun.....passes a rainy day on. If you are a Canon user then tethered is free. Nikon you will have to pay for the software. Tethering is not necessary.
DeleteSoftware is available free from Combine ZP but it is not as easy to use as Helicon Focus.
Non oft the stacking software likes changes in exposure so manual and flash is the way to go.
