LOOKING GOOD. (12/03/13)

Another wonderful start to the day. It is really cool minus ten degrees and a bit of a breeze whistling through my jeans.

There is not a cloud in the sky so things are looking really good for this evening and views of comet Pan Starr.rav pan1203131  I’m praying that the sky remains like this for another nine hours. If UK weather runs true to form it will be a miracle, miracles do happen.

_V0G5915_edited-1 I have a choice of venue, this seat………………………………..

_V0G5910_edited-1   Or this one……..This is looking the best. It’s a more attractive bench and further from the houses and their lights.

_V0G5906_edited-1  The ruins of the Roman Bath House…..basking in wall to wall sunshine.

I’ll have a siesta this afternoon, the camera batteries are on charge. The memory card is in the camera and the lens and camera are outside in the shade getting used to the cold.

I’ll see what this evening produces.

Have a good day.

  1. Hi there - hope you have good luck.

A friend of mine tried to see the comet last night in Ulverston, but no luck!

    1. Thanks Stewart, Ulverston is just down the road. It was too cloudy at dusk last night. It is going to be close to the horizon so will be difficult with a totally clear sky.....I'll see how it goes.

    1. Michelle, it looks as if we have at least another day of this weather before the rains return. An early start helps with the pictures.

  3. Wrap one of your spare batteries in an old sock or two when not in use, it'll prevent the cold draining it, saying that the 1d has remarkable battery life any weather.

    1. Thanks Douglas, I only have one battery for the 1D. Oly and 5D batteries I keep inside my shirt in really cols weather.
It has clouded over here. I'll walk down about 1830h but I'll need a big hole in the cloud.

  4. At this time of the year, it never looks quite that cold. The angle and saturated colours from the sun always seem to bathe an image in warmth.

    1. They are good seats Bob.
The Romans used to light a fire to warm the bath house up. I guess it used to have doors and a roof. The showers on the camp site are heated and weather proof I just had a quick wash and a squirt of underarm spray. Freezing it is. Cloudy and freezing. Tomorrow looks good for sky watching.

  6. Hope you get your wish! I like that photo of the ruins of the Roman bath. And the rounded bench looks very nice.

    1. Monica, there is no chance of finding it. I can get details of it's declination and bearing but astronomers use right ascension not a true bearing. I'll have to learn R.A. Very complicated is astronomy.

    2. PS. Being an ex navigator I know it is measured from the first point of Aries...fat lot of help that is why can't the star gazers use an azimuth ring or at least give me a clue....10 degrees north of west would let me point in roughly the right direction.

    3. Heard it mentioned on the TV news earlier this evening. They said something about looking at the rising moon and sideways below to the right... Looked out of the window and there were clouds gathering. Probably containing snow they intend to drop on us tomorrow... (sigh)

  8. I hope things work for you. Here it's been cloudy with not even a chance for a brief glimpse so I'm depending on you so that I can see the comet.
