MUMBO JUMBO. (05/03/13)

Last night I estimated that high or highish water would coincide with sunset. I set off down to the coast, sounds like a route march, it takes fifteen minutes. My estimation was a bit out but I’ll try again tonight as today is the last sunny day for months. It should be perfect tonight.

I have been looking at a RAW converter called Capture One. Capture One have introduced a cut down version they call Capture One Express. I have a sixty day free trial and am impressed with it. The work flow is totally different to ADOBE’s. It has camera profiles for many top end cameras and lenses so if one has a camera that it recognises then editing is a one hit one click job. I have played around but I often end up with it’s original  suggestion. Like any different software it does require one to find and remember where all it’s doings can be found….A bit of a pain for someone of my limited mental capacity. I waste fifty percent of my little grey cells shouting rude words at the computer which is not productive.

image  This is the interface. One just has to forget ADOBE and it is simple and logical. It is just a RAW converter so doesn’t use Layers like Photoshop. The full version is very expensive but a drop in the ocean when one compares it with PHASE ONE cameras. Come on Camelot…….draw my numbers out and make a man with a poorly tummy a happy man with a poorly tummy.

_V0G5759 Sunset from Ravenglass……..Cap 1 Express processed.

_V0G5759_edited-1 PS Elements 9 processed. With a bit more pushing and shoving in Elements I could achieve similar results. This is just processed in Elements RAW converter but sharpened in Elements editor using unsharp mask.

imageJust to bore you all witless this is the EXIF data.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe camera was set up on a tripod with cable release and mirror lock up. I didn’t bother blanking the view finder as it was not sunny and bright. The rectangular bit of plastic is an ND Graduated filter. It allows one to darken the bright sky and save highlight blow out. This one is 0.8 density to clear. To convert density to stops multiply by ten and divide by three.

I bet you really enjoyed all this…….I am probably being a little presumptive…..Anyone still here?

_V0G5697_edited-1  I’ll give you a pretty girl.

_V0G5639_edited-1   and a pretty flower……The first is a lady Blackbird and the second is a Crocus……a yellow one.

Over the past week or so I have stopped copywriting images. They are free at this size. Full size they will cost a fortune. I would like a Phase One, Leica S or ALPA camera.

Bet you enjoyed all this.

  1. You be careful Adrian, going out late at night is a dangerous time, you never know who you'll bump into, strange things can happen!

Capture One looks like the business, but I think I'll stick with ACR, it caters for my simple needs...better the devil you know!

    Have fun...[;o)

    1. Trevor, who I bumped into is none of your business. Frightening who gets onto beaches at dusk. Worth a psot all on it's own.
It's worth looking at if you have many images to edit. It will resize and sharpen then export. I think it is around £60.00p

  6. I'm the type of learner where a little of this will rub off and be enough to connect to something else. I'll never get %100 but will have enough knowledge to make some sense.
Yes I was with you to the end and the crocus was icing on the cake.

    1. Red, I have stopped doing lessons. There are plenty of folk out there much better at it than I am. If you want to know anything that I refer to then just e-mail me.
Nobody yet in the whole of history knows 100%. It's just fun trying to be a know all. Crocus are getting two a penny here.

    1. Ulla, I did try Lightroom but hated it. I'm not convinced by Capture One or Phase One digital backs, for that matter. The market is too small for them ever to become affordable. They have only just removed the anti alias filter from the sensor or collector or whatever they call it.
They are good but at 60k sterling for just a back......? They are not that good.
I do read your posts but rarely comment. I'll try not to be so remiss in the future.

  8. I use Captur One, I was lucky in that I got the (too) expensive one. On the screen grab you've done showing the product, on the left handside I added a few tools, the spot removal both noise reduction features and the focus tool, are they availiable on your version?

    1. Douglas, it is very fast and seems accurate. I really like it working in real time. I realise that I added a preset for a warmer and more saturated look. It's how I like stuff. I set all my cameras white balance to 7000k. I have a func button for flash or inside things. Don't always remember to use it but in RAW images can usually be salvaged.
No it doesn't but it may have. It is like Elements a very basic version of the full Cap 1. ( I did have Cap 1 v6 for thirty days but couldn't get into it. I usually export to Elements....Hark at me! Usually! I have only had this software a couple of days!
I have not got my head round importing images. Unusually, for these days, I can't seem to drag and drop. I like the Elements organiser piece of cake it is. Then I just create a folder for really posh ones and reportage ones which in reality is what I want. At around £60.00p it is good value.

  9. I wish that I was at least a foot taller than less would go over my head.

  10. Love the photos, I was laughing (and maybe agreeing) with above comment thought that if I was somewhat taller maybe so much of the post wouldn't be over my head. LOL.

  11. Hi there - interesting post. About six months ago I started using Lightroom - its a revelation and not that expensive.

The times 10 and divide by 3 was a good tip!

    Cheers

    1. Stewart, Lightroom is popular. I tried it several years ago and just never thought it offered much more than Elements.
I use Cokin filters as Lee are too expensive and very fragile. I would like a big stopper though. Excuse the expression...it's what they call them. Black Glass I think Australians call them.

  12. The processing of photos is tricky. I use microsoft editor for the shots. But I like what your program does. I've been thinking about getting a program but just not sure which one.....

  13. Chris, if you can face the steep learning curve then I like Photoshop Elements. Capture One Raw converter is far more powerful though.
