THE SPICE OF LIFE. (27/03/15)

It’s been all go here, I’m exhausted watching folk work. Yesterday the new pontoon arrived and I intended to make a time lapse video of it being installed. The rain put paid to that.pontoon   It looks grand even on a murky cold morning. I collected the dogs up and came back for breakfast. It wasn’t very nice first thing but by the time I was ready to wander the sun was shining.

I decided to have a look at the pond to see if there was any sign of frogs, toads or newts and on the way back to have another look at the Earth Tongue. I searched low and lower for it but either it had gone or it was somewhere else. Not to worry it was a good walk despite the lack of anything approaching what I went out for.

_V0G7699   This is the pond, it looks to be amphibian territory but there is still no sign of anything.

_MG_3108 With the exception of a wet and filthy Molly…….She thinks the frogs should be about by now.

_V0G7702   I am hoping that the leaves will appear soon as pretty as the place is at the moment it will look better with sunlight streaming through new leaves.

_V0G7703          The Jane Frazer Monument and Molly. Alf is around somewhere.

_MG_3111       The remains of a Toadstool.

_MG_3109

_MG_3110       Another wreck, the latter two are both the same things and look as if they were puff balls on a stalk way back in the autumn. Definitely a small puffball head.

_MG_3106       New life. Fruit bodies of the moss Bryum capillare.

It was time to head home. I washed the dogs in the loch, got back to the van and just as the kettle boiled this little beauty hopped into range. I have been trying to get a picture of it for three weeks.

_V0G7712      Pied Wagtail. I managed to get it almost in focus before it flew away, a much better result than a bit of grass and no bird.

Variety is the spice of life. Have a great weekend.

  1. Please explain the Jane Frazer monument. I cannot find her old enough to belong to it. Thanks.

    1. Joanne, this is all I know:
Simon became the 11th laird of Foyers, and as it turned out, to be the last of the Frasers of Foyers, for he only had one daughter, Jane, who predeceased him in 1817. Jane died of a broken heart after her fiancee, Patrick Grant, her cousin from Glenmoriston, was killed when he accidentally fell out of a tree. Jane, although she married, died soon afterwards - a monument to her memory stands on the loch shore, below the site of Foyers Mansion House.

    2. Thanks. The only Jane Frazer I found produced The Great Budapest Hotel. Long after moss grew on that stone.

    1. Carol, she is dead. All I know is this:

I'm starting to wish the memorial was still buried under several tons of Norwegian Spruce.

    2. Dying of a broken heart ~ do you reckon modern women can still die of that? That will be a good topic for YP or GB to blog about. I know you would never blog about such matters. So thank you for that info ~ I know I could have probably found the information via Google but it is always nicer to ask.

    3. Carol, broken hearts still kill many folk today. It's smoking and eating fatty foods with too much salt and sugar.

  5. Lovely photos. Could you do inches rather than metric, for people like me, please?

    1. Frances, I can but I get far fewer comments on macro and you are the only one who requires Imperial measure. I expect Americans do but I have few American readers. I'll do one in sixteenths of an inch if I remember. I need a scale for every lens combination so already have five scales. What's another one.

  6. Nice macro of the moss. My calibration slide arrived today so now I know the width of each lens view, which helps.

    1. John, it will be interesting to see how it works.
I just take a photograph of a ruler then draw the scale using it as a guide. I have to remember to put the scale on before I touch the image other than that it seems to work well.

  8. A nice sunny day goes a long way to having a good day. New leaves? You are so fortunate. We will be at least 6 weeks before we get any leaves.

    1. Graham, nothing wrong with the bird but I would have been happier were it a bit sharper.

  10. Pied wagtail. A few of them seemed to like the school car park when I was working as a teacher. When everybody else had left, I would often go out to my car and see one fluttering around my wing mirror as if seeking a partner or a rival.
