A STINK. (23/08/15)

Today’s post is all pictures of fungi. I am getting so far behind that I’ll either have to file them or post them._MG_1822
Really smelly…………………………

Even worse………………………..

Spotless. This is a Common Stinkhorn. Phallus impudicus. There is no mistaking this but the Flesh flies seem to love it.
amdeceiver
Amethyst Deceiver. Laccaria amethystea.
deceiver
The Deceiver. Laccaria  laccata.
compuffball
Common Puffball. Lycoperdon periatum.
These are all edible but rather you than I.

  1. Fantastic photos of the fungi. I especially like the first two photos with all the flies clustered on the head.

    1. Margaret, the smell is nauseating like finding a dead sheep that's been in the sun for a week.

    1. John, it is amazing how fast they cleaned it up. About an hour from start to finish.

  4. Visually I like the pink one, sorry, the Amethyst Deceiver. Wouldn't trust it, though ;)

    1. Monica, you would need an awful lot of them for a meal. They can turn white then they are not easily identified.

  6. I'm not quite sure what to say about the Stinkhorn images, Adrian (apart from the fact that they're excellently executed). I've never seen anything like it in my life - a Phallus covered in flies - and probably don't want to!!

    1. Richard, I don't see them often so they have novelty value.

  8. We have toadstools popping up in our little backyard, but they don't last long: a fact that doesn't displease me.

  10. Why has Nature given some fungi such an awful smell? There must be a purpose to it. How do the flies help?

    1. YP, the smell attracts flies and beetles and they spread the spores for the fungus.

  11. Oh my, these are all incredible images Adrian. I don't think I could handle the flies or the smell. Glad you could!! P.S. Today I posted 'The Rest of the Story' about my Milky Way image.
