WHAT A PUZZLE. (19/05/16)

Untitled-1
I took this a couple of days ago as the new leaves were looking quite exciting. I then thought the image could do with a bit of a lift so had a go and made a mess. Not to worry, I’ve posted worse.
Last night, the previous evening and the afternoon before I’ve been trying to figure out how to get my animated video titles to cast a shadow on the video running behind them. I thought it would be a simple compositing job but it is proving far more complex. I now have half a result by popping a plane behind the animated text and making it pure white to catch the shadows. It does that in fine style but when I convert it to Multiply blend it leaves a grey cast on the video. I looked for a ‘How To Do It’ on the internet but it seems that Blender struggles with this job. There is a tutorial in German but I’ll have to see what he does as I understand about one word in a hundred*. If it rains today I’ll have another go. Tomorrow is forecast to be sunny so I’ll go insecting first thing then I have to go mowing. It’s all go.
 *  One word in a hundred doesn't sound so bad but Germans can make a sentence into a word. Little wonder they are often misunderstood.

  1. Do you ever think that sometimes you set the bar too high?

    1. Graham, I like having a problem to ponder over. I have now moved the shadows to a separate render layer and used an Alpha or transparent channel it looks good on one frame but now I have to mask and track the shadow as the lettering changes size shape and position. This is a really tedious job usually performed by a numpty with a doctorate in film studies. I may give it a miss and watch a few episodes of Yesterday in Parliament from 2008 or see if I can find a numpty. It would make hand colouring frame by frame the Red Coat in Schindler's List seem exciting.
I guess the answer is yes.

  2. The effect on the photo is curious but not bad.

We are finally having some warm weather here so the leaves may appear in the next few weeks.

Have a great day whatever you do.

    1. No way Margaret. Win some lose some. Few folk will see it and those that do a quick glance will be enough.

  5. Interesting image. I should have read the text before I puzzled over it for so long. By the way, love your comment about the graveyard. It works as an incentive - do what you can while you can and be thankful for that.

    1. Pauline, I used to smile at school when teachers used. "Do you want to end up a binman?" The answer was yes but I never had the nerve to tell them. Bin men work job and finish and have more free time than teachers, were fitter and on the whole more interesting.

  6. I'm wondering what Salvador Dali would do with a dslr, you tube, a laptop and photoshop now, thanks ;-)
I fully understand the German thing though, having worked for a German company I often found myself baffled and banging my head against a wall. Maybe the tutorial has an English/American version on You Tube?

    1. Douglas, Dali would make more of it than I ever will.
I think I have nearly sorted the shadow malarkey. It is very time consuming so I will really have to settle on a title to make it worth while.
